Can you use a joystick with MSFS via Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox Cloud Gaming does not pass a flight stick to MSFS. See why even Xbox-compatible HOTAS devices fail, what works instead, and the best fix.
No. Microsoft Flight Simulator streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming does not receive normal flight-stick or HOTAS input; the cloud session accepts supported gamepad-style controls instead. Plugging an Xbox-compatible joystick into your console, PC or television will not make MSFS detect it unless the device can present itself as a standard gamepad.
Why does a joystick not work through Xbox Cloud Gaming?
Xbox Cloud Gaming runs Microsoft Flight Simulator on remote hardware, while your device receives the video stream and sends supported control inputs back. The service does not pass the full USB or specialist flight-controller interface through to the simulator.
This is why a joystick can light up, appear in the Windows game-controller panel or work in a locally installed simulator yet remain absent from the cloud session. An Xbox compatibility badge means the stick can work with a locally installed Xbox game; it does not guarantee cloud peripheral support.
The restriction is imposed by the cloud input layer rather than by MSFS itself, so changing sensitivity, reconnecting the stick or resetting control profiles will not solve it.
Which controls work with cloud-streamed MSFS?
A supported Xbox-style gamepad is the dependable option for Microsoft Flight Simulator through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The cloud client may offer other inputs on certain devices, but specialist throttle, rudder-pedal and HOTAS interfaces are not passed through as native flight controls.
For help assigning the essential aircraft functions, see our explanation of the default Xbox controller layout and binding conflicts. Assistance settings and autopilot can also reduce the workload when a controller lacks the precision and number of axes provided by a full flight setup.
Can you map a joystick to an Xbox controller?
On a PC, input-mapping software may be able to make a joystick appear to the cloud client as a virtual Xbox gamepad. This is an unofficial workaround: MSFS still sees a gamepad, not a flight stick.
- Joystick and throttle axes must be squeezed into the gamepad's available axes.
- A separate throttle may behave incorrectly because gamepad sticks normally return to centre.
- Many HOTAS buttons, hats and mode switches cannot be represented cleanly.
- Gamepad dead zones and response curves can make fine control less predictable.
- A physical controller and virtual controller can produce duplicate or conflicting inputs.
It may be adequate for casual flying, but we would not choose this route for precise approaches or a multi-device cockpit.
How can you use a real joystick with Microsoft Flight Simulator?
You need to run Microsoft Flight Simulator locally on hardware that supports the controller.
| Setup | Joystick support | Main requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | No native HOTAS input | Use a supported gamepad or gamepad emulation |
| Locally installed on PC | Yes | A Windows-compatible USB joystick or HOTAS |
| Locally installed on Xbox Series X|S | Yes, for supported models | The controller must explicitly support Xbox; ordinary PC-only USB sticks generally will not work |
If you are using Xbox One, cloud streaming lets that console run MSFS but does not add flight-stick passthrough. Our guide to how MSFS cloud play works on Xbox One explains the wider platform limitations.
Before buying hardware for a local installation, check our guide to PC and Xbox joystick compatibility. Once a stick is detected by a locally installed PC copy, use the simulator's sensitivity settings and follow the proper joystick calibration process rather than trying to calibrate it inside a cloud session.
Why is an Xbox HOTAS powered but not detected?
Power does not mean the cloud session can receive the controller's inputs. USB power, local operating-system detection and native Xbox compatibility are separate from Xbox Cloud Gaming's supported input transport.
If MSFS lists only a controller profile and moving the joystick produces no response, the missing cloud passthrough is the cause. Reinstalling the simulator, deleting profiles or changing aircraft will not enable it; use a gamepad for cloud play or an installed copy of MSFS for genuine joystick and HOTAS support.
