Fix a controller not working in MSFS 2024 Cloud Gaming. Check pairing, cloud passthrough, session order, profiles and unsupported flight hardware.
In Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 through Xbox Cloud Gaming, a controller usually fails because the streaming device cannot see it, it was connected after the session began, or cloud passthrough does not support it. Use a standard gamepad, connect it before launch, restart the stream, then load the gamepad's default MSFS profile.
The key distinction is that the controller connects to your local console, computer, television or mobile device—not directly to the cloud-hosted simulator. Xbox Cloud Gaming must recognise the input and pass it into MSFS 2024. Our explanation of how controller input reaches a cloud-hosted Flight Simulator session covers that chain in more detail.
Where is the controller input being lost?
The controller's behaviour outside and inside MSFS usually reveals which part has failed.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No response in the cloud interface or simulator | Pairing, cable, battery or client problem | Confirm that the host device detects the controller before opening the stream |
| Cloud menus work, but the aircraft does not respond | Wrong or empty MSFS control profile | Select the gamepad in Controls and restore its default preset |
| Joystick or yoke works locally but never appears in the cloud session | Unsupported peripheral passthrough | Use a standard gamepad or install and run MSFS locally |
| Inputs arrive late or continue after releasing a control | Streaming latency or connection loss | Stabilise the network and start a fresh cloud session |
How do I fix an MSFS 2024 Cloud Gaming controller?
- Confirm local detection. Pair the controller with the device running the cloud client, not with another nearby console or computer. Check that it can operate the client interface or appears in the host device's controller settings.
- Disconnect duplicate input devices. Leave one gamepad connected while testing. Close controller-remapping or virtual-gamepad software because duplicate devices can make the cloud client select the wrong input.
- Connect before launching. Switch on or plug in the controller first, then start Xbox Cloud Gaming and MSFS 2024. If it was connected afterwards, end the streamed session completely and relaunch it rather than merely returning to the game's main menu.
- Try a direct connection. Replace the batteries, reconnect Bluetooth, or use a data-capable USB cable where the device supports one. Avoid an unpowered USB hub while diagnosing the fault.
- Give the stream input focus. In a browser, click inside the game stream and leave any address bar, text field or overlay. If the controller works in the client but one browser ignores it, test the service through another supported client on the same device.
- Reload the default gamepad profile. Open MSFS Controls, select the actual gamepad rather than the keyboard or mouse, and activate its default preset. Save the selection before returning to the cockpit. Our Xbox controller connection and profile checks provide the fuller setup sequence.
- Test without a custom configuration. Use a simple default aircraft and check whether the cockpit controls or external control surfaces move. Do not delete the entire cloud save as an early troubleshooting step; that risks losing unrelated settings when a default control preset usually isolates the problem.
- Update and restart the local equipment. Restart the host device, update its cloud-gaming client or browser, and install any available controller firmware through the device's normal management utility.
Why does the controller work in menus but not fly the aircraft?
If the controller operates menus or the cockpit camera, Cloud Gaming is receiving it. The fault is then normally an MSFS control profile, missing axis assignment or conflicting binding rather than Bluetooth or the network.
Restore the default gamepad preset first. If custom controls are required, verify the aileron, elevator, rudder and throttle assignments, remove duplicate axes, and save the profile under a distinct name. The detailed process for checking and saving MSFS 2024 controller bindings is useful when the device appears in Controls but produces no flight input.
If the cockpit yoke or control surfaces move but the aeroplane resists the command, the controller is working. Disengage the autopilot, leave Active Pause, and disable any piloting assistance that has control of the aircraft before testing again.
Can I use a HOTAS, yoke or rudder pedals through Cloud Gaming?
Xbox Cloud Gaming does not provide the full USB/HID passthrough required by most flight sticks, yokes, throttle quadrants and rudder pedals. A device being recognised by Windows, or working with a locally installed copy of MSFS, does not mean the cloud-hosted Xbox version can receive it.
A supported standard gamepad is the dependable choice for cloud play. To use specialist flight controls, run Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 locally on a platform that supports that specific hardware; our platform-by-platform controller compatibility guidance explains the distinction.
Is delayed control input a controller fault?
Inputs that arrive late are usually a streaming problem, not a missing controller. Use Ethernet or a strong low-latency wireless connection for the host device, pause competing downloads, and restart the cloud session if delay begins after a reconnect or sleep cycle.
A wired controller can remove Bluetooth instability, but it cannot correct network latency. Likewise, a faster connection will not make an unsupported flight peripheral appear in the cloud session.
