VFR vs IFR: what's the difference in flight simulators?

VFR flying in a flight simulator means operating mainly by visual reference, remaining in visual conditions and navigating with landmarks or visual procedures. IFR means flying an instrument clearance, route and procedures using cockpit instruments and ATC. IFR can be flown in clear weather; VFR pilots may still use GPS and instruments.

The core difference is the set of flight rules being followed, not whether the aircraft has instruments or which navigation device is switched on.

Exact weather minima, equipment requirements and ATC services vary by country and airspace class. A simulator may simplify these rules or fail to enforce them at all, so realistic flying still depends on the pilot applying the correct procedures.

What does selecting VFR or IFR change in a simulator?

Selecting VFR or IFR usually changes the flight plan and ATC service, but it does not alter the aircraft's flight model, create suitable weather or configure the avionics for you.

An IFR selection commonly enables clearance delivery, assigned altitudes, vectors and instrument approaches. VFR may produce a more flexible route, traffic advisories and visual arrival instructions. Built-in ATC behaviour differs between simulators and does not always reproduce real procedures accurately.

Flight rules and routing methods are separate choices. A direct GPS route can be VFR or IFR, while VOR navigation can also be used under either set of rules. Can you fly IFR in clear weather or use instruments under VFR?

Yes: IFR does not mean bad weather, and VFR does not mean flying without instruments.

Airliners and general-aviation aircraft frequently operate under IFR in clear skies because it provides a structured clearance, routing and ATC service. A VFR pilot can use an attitude indicator, radio aids, moving map or GPS, but must still maintain the required visual conditions and comply with VFR rules.

Which should you choose for a simulator flight?

Choose VFR for visual flying and local practice; choose IFR when you want structured instrument navigation, ATC clearances or operation through cloud and reduced visibility.

  • Choose VFR for sightseeing, circuits, basic handling, visual navigation and short flights in suitable weather.
  • Choose IFR for airline operations, instrument departures and arrivals, airway routes, low visibility or instrument-procedure practice.
  • Choose IFR in clear weather when learning procedures without adding the difficulty of cloud or turbulence.
  • Choose VFR first if you are still learning to control the aircraft, trim accurately and recognise the circuit visually.

An IFR flight also needs an aircraft equipped for the route and intended approach. A GPS in the cockpit does not guarantee that every procedure is available or that the correct navigation data, receiver and CDI source have been selected.

Do IFR flights require an autopilot or ILS?

No, IFR can be hand-flown and does not require an ILS approach.

An IFR pilot may use RNAV, VOR, NDB, localiser, ILS or other procedures supported by the aircraft and simulator. The autopilot reduces workload, but it remains necessary to understand its lateral and vertical modes and to take over if it captures the wrong course or altitude.

An IFR flight may also finish with a visual approach after the airport is in sight. Accepting a visual approach does not automatically turn the flight into VFR or cancel the IFR clearance.

Common VFR and IFR mistakes in flight simulators

Most problems come from treating the simulator's flight plan, avionics and ATC clearance as though they were the same thing.

  • Loading a route without obtaining clearance: a route programmed into the GPS is not an ATC clearance.
  • Following the magenta line instead of ATC: vectors or amended clearances take priority over the originally loaded route.
  • Using the wrong CDI source: the aircraft may be tracking GPS while the pilot expects it to capture a VOR or localiser.
  • Departing VFR into marginal weather: simulator weather can deteriorate en route, leaving no safe visual route or suitable diversion.
  • Treating autopilot as automatic IFR: incorrect altitude, approach or navigation modes can carry the aircraft through a cleared level or away from the procedure.
  • Descending below approach minima: if the required visual reference is unavailable at the decision point, fly the missed approach rather than continuing towards an unseen runway.
