What is the difference between IFR and VFR in MSFS?

In Microsoft Flight Simulator, VFR means flying and navigating mainly by outside visual references in suitable visibility and cloud conditions. IFR means following instruments, an instrument flight plan and normally an ATC clearance, often using published procedures. IFR can be flown in clear weather; VFR is not simply flying without instruments.

Does IFR mean bad weather and VFR mean clear weather?

No: IFR and VFR are sets of operating rules, while VMC and IMC describe the weather conditions. An IFR flight can take place in perfect visibility, which is often the safest way to learn instrument procedures. A realistic VFR flight should remain in visual meteorological conditions.

Exact VFR visibility and cloud-clearance minima vary by country, airspace and altitude. Microsoft Flight Simulator does not reliably prevent you from departing VFR in unsuitable conditions, so inspect the airport report and learn how to interpret METAR visibility, cloud and wind information before choosing your rules.

What changes in Microsoft Flight Simulator?

Choosing IFR or VFR changes route planning, ATC handling and the procedures you are expected to fly; it does not activate a different flight model.

In MSFS 2020, the choice is normally made through the World Map. MSFS 2024 provides newer planning tools, but the principle is the same: select a visual or instrument route, inspect it, then ensure the aircraft's avionics contain the route you intend to fly. What happens on a VFR flight?

On a VFR flight, you normally use the horizon, terrain, landmarks, airports and runway references to control and navigate the aircraft. GPS, navigation radios and autopilot are still allowed; the defining point is that you remain able to conduct the flight visually.

What happens on an IFR flight?

On an IFR flight, you follow assigned headings, altitudes and navigation fixes using the cockpit instruments rather than relying on a visible horizon. A complete flight may include a departure procedure, en-route airways, an arrival and an ILS or RNAV approach.

How do I choose IFR or VFR in MSFS?

Choose the flight rules in the planning interface before departure, then confirm that the route, weather, avionics and ATC plan all agree.

  1. Select the type of flight. Use VFR for visual flying or IFR for an instrument flight plan.
  2. Choose an appropriate route. Depending on the simulator version and aircraft, the planner may offer direct or radio-beacon VFR routing and low- or high-airway IFR routing.
  3. Inspect the altitude and procedures. A generated route can contain an unsuitable cruise altitude, an awkward transition or a procedure the aircraft cannot fly.
  4. Check the cockpit navigation system. Many default aircraft receive the planner route automatically, while some complex aircraft use an independent flight-management system. Never assume the magenta line is correct without checking the legs.
  5. Set suitable weather. Begin IFR practice in clear conditions and add cloud or reduced visibility only after you can control the aircraft by instruments.
  6. Use the matching ATC service. Request an IFR clearance for the filed instrument plan. For VFR, use the available airport or flight-following services without expecting IFR-style route clearance.

Which should a beginner learn first?

Basic VFR is the better starting point for most new pilots because it develops aircraft control, trim, visual navigation and landing judgement before adding instrument workload.

  • Choose VFR for sightseeing, local circuits, bush flying, visual navigation and learning a light aircraft.
  • Choose IFR for airliner operations, structured cross-country routes, instrument approaches or flights through cloud.
  • Practise IFR in clear weather when learning new avionics or procedures; poor visibility should not be the first difficulty added.

Airliner users will spend most flights under IFR, but they still need visual skills for taxiing, some approaches and the final landing. Likewise, a VFR pilot should understand the basic instruments even when the horizon is visible.

What mistakes cause IFR and VFR problems in MSFS?

Most problems come from treating the selected flight rules as an automatic flying mode rather than a plan the pilot must understand and follow.

  • Expecting the autopilot to fly IFR: the autopilot follows selected modes and programmed guidance, not the legal or procedural meaning of IFR.
  • Assuming VFR forbids instruments: VFR pilots can use GPS, radios and autopilot while continuing to maintain visual reference.
  • Trusting the generated route blindly: check every procedure, transition, altitude and discontinuity before departure.
  • Letting ATC and the avionics disagree: after a runway or approach change, verify the active route instead of turning solely because either ATC or the magenta line says so.
  • Continuing VFR into cloud: the simulator may allow it, but realistic practice means turning back, diverting or landing before visual references are lost.

Microsoft Flight Simulator represents the practical differences between IFR and VFR well enough for procedural practice, but it does not enforce pilot licences, aircraft certification or every regional rule.
