Approach and runway coverage

Philadelphia’s procedures serve seven of its eight runway ends, with ILS, RNAV (GPS) and localiser options forming an unusually deep approach set. Thirteen ILS procedures include three with CAT II/III minima, while the localiser procedures add non-precision variants. The runway layout also offers markedly different lengths: the 12,000 ft and 9,500 ft parallel runways provide substantially more distance than the 5,001 ft runway, making runway assignment significant for aircraft requiring longer take-off or landing runs.

Local chart context

Northeast Philadelphia has the broadest procedure coverage among the nearby fields, although its 13 charts remain much thinner than Philadelphia International’s set. Cross Keys, Pine Valley and Wings Field have only sparse coverage. The New York and Washington sectionals provide wider VFR context, while the Philadelphia Terminal Area Chart adds more detailed coverage around the city.

Where can I download the KPHL airport diagram?

The official FAA airport diagram for Philadelphia Intl is free to download at the top of this page. It shows runways, taxiways, ramp layout and hold-short positions, and is reissued every 28 days.

Does KPHL have CAT II or CAT III approaches?

Yes. 3 of the published ILS procedures carry CAT II/III minima, which allow approaches in lower visibility than a standard CAT I ILS. Those plates are listed separately in the approach table above, marked CAT II or CAT III in the chart name.

Is KPHL a towered airport?

Yes. Philadelphia Intl has an operating control tower, within New York Center's airspace. Tower, ground and clearance frequencies are listed on this page.

How many runways does KPHL have?

4, which is why the chart set is as large as it is — each runway end that supports an instrument approach needs its own plates. The runway diagram on this page shows the layout to scale.

Are these KPHL charts current?

They are from the FAA cycle effective 6 August 2026, which is superseded on 3 September 2026. We publish each new cycle on its effective date. They are for flight simulation and reference only — not for real-world navigation.
