Johannesburg International Airport in South Africa (ICAO: FAJS) acts as a prominent gateway for both regional and intercontinental routes. This freeware AFCAD configuration, created by Ray Smith, introduces extensive modifications tailored to the default setting in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It allocates additional gates, supplies dedicated parking positions for large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, and refines ground operations with fresh taxiway markers. Engineers also rebuilt service roads to reduce congestion, and a custom vantage point from the control tower helps you survey apron and runway activities with ease.
Updated Airport Elements and Layout
Parking Assignments: The design features accurately aligned slots for diverse aircraft sizes and categories. Wide-body stands accommodate large passenger jets, while supplementary gates expedite traffic flow for domestic, transcontinental, and connecting flights.
Taxiway and Signage Improvements: New labels and notifications allow for more efficient ground navigation, eliminating confusion when guiding aircraft between terminals and runways. This enhancement is particularly valuable for virtual pilots managing high-volume air traffic scenarios.
Additional Fuel Trucks & Service Paths: Extra fueling vehicles and rearranged service roads minimize travel times for ground crews, ensuring faster turnaround and smoother operations during peak hours.
Strategic Tower Perspective: A modified observer location at the top of the tower delivers a broad field of view across taxiways and ramps, allowing you to easily spot aircraft movements in real-time.
Primary BGL Components
For this package to function, three essential files must be installed:
- FAJS_ADE_RS.BGL and FAJS_ADE_CVX.bgl
- These define parking setups, taxi flows, and corrected terrain elements.
- FAJS_ADE_OBJ.BGL
- This contains various supplementary objects for the updated airport scenery.
Installation Process
- Move FAJS_ADE_RS.BGL and FAJS_ADE_CVX.bgl into your “Addon Scenery/scenery” directory inside Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
- Place FAJS_ADE_OBJ.BGL in the “Scenery/Global/scenery” folder.
- To see the enhanced jetway extensions, locate jfk_jetway.dds (day texture) and jfk_jetway_LM.dds (night texture) within “FSX/Scenery/NAME/Texture” and copy them to the “Scenery/Global/Texture” folder.
- Run the simulator, and you will notice the new additions and revised structures once you load Johannesburg International Airport.
Note: If these texture files have already been copied for any of Ray Smith’s previous add-ons, this step is unnecessary.
Important AFCAD Reminders
- Only use these FAJS files for your Johannesburg International installation at any one time. Delete or remove other versions of FAJS.bgl from the same location to prevent unexpected parking glitches or mismatched taxiway configurations.
- If you are running additional AI traffic programs, confirm they are not overwriting this airport file, as multiple AFCADs targeting the same airport commonly result in conflicts.
Removal of Modified Files
- To restore the simulator’s default FAJS airport, simply remove or delete these custom BGLs. Once removed, the original scenery will load automatically.
Tower View Enhancement Tip
If you wish to pan around the airport from the revised tower viewpoint, bind a command for View track/pan Toggle
in your control settings. Triggering this command unlocks the camera from the user aircraft so you can pivot 360 degrees using a hat switch or keyboard commands. When finished observing, activate it again to recenter on your current aircraft position.
Enjoy the upgraded experience of Johannesburg International Airport. This modification is freely provided by its creator, Ray Smith, for the community’s benefit. Customize, fly, and immerse yourself in the dynamic atmosphere of one of South Africa’s principal air transport facilities.
