This Varig Brasil trijet repaint showcases the Star Alliance scheme on a fully equipped iFDG McDonnell Douglas MD-11 for FS2004. It comes as a complete freeware package and features immersive animations, authentic wing views, a full lighting array, and precise 32-bit reflective textures. Developed by the international Flightsim Design Group (iFDG) and re-liveried by Nicholas Wilkinson, it perfectly captures the blend of Varig Brasil’s distinctive style and modern airline alliances.
Aircraft Background and Livery Highlights
The MD-11 is a long-range, wide-fuselage aircraft known for its three-engine (trijet) layout. Initially built at the Douglas Products Division, this model represented an evolution of the DC-10 family, incorporating key aerodynamic and avionics refinements. Varig Brasil, once a significant carrier in South America and a proud member of the Star Alliance, flew various wide-bodies to match its extensive route portfolio. This repaint visualizes that historic connection, complete with Star Alliance insignia applied to the fuselage and tail.
Advanced Animations and System Integrations
The included model offers comprehensive flight-control animations, such as trailing edge flaps, flaperons (a blend of flaps and ailerons), and movable spoilers, all synchronized with the pilot’s inputs. Animated control surfaces respond with accuracy to ensure realistic roll, pitch, and yaw sensations. Additionally, the cockpit lighting and external navigation lights illuminate according to real-world MD-11 sequences, enhancing nighttime operations.

Performance Characteristics and Technical Features
In real-world service, the MD-11 offered extended-range capabilities through aerodynamic enhancements, including refined winglets and a modified tail cone. Fuel tanks within the horizontal stabilizer allowed extensive intercontinental flights. This simulation package reflects that engineering approach and replicates performance nuances like long-haul fuel efficiency and the trijet’s balanced thrust distribution. Because the MD-11 supported General Electric or Pratt & Whitney powerplants, the developers have modeled accurate engine parameters to match each thrust class setting within FS2004’s limitations.
Flight Deck Innovations
The real MD-11 was designed to streamline pilot workflow using a dual digital automatic flight control system and advanced flight management computers. These features reduced cockpit complexity and enabled a crew of two to handle sophisticated flight profiles. In this freeware add-on, those concepts are reflected through responsive autopilot logic, precise vertical and lateral navigation, and an accurately simulated two-pilot cockpit layout (i.e., no flight engineer). The six-screen electronic display arrangement (commonly referred to as cathode ray tube instrumentation) keeps critical flight data easily visible.
Installation and Setup
To install, extract the included folders into your main FS2004 “Aircraft” directory. Make sure the accompanying effects files land in the simulator’s EFFECTS folder. You can activate special effects by pressing the “I” key in Flight Simulator. Implementation is straightforward, allowing you to load the aircraft immediately for any long-haul or regional route served by Varig Brasil in your virtual skies.
Credits and Contributors
This mod is a collaboration of iFDG’s entire team. The model and FDE (flight dynamics engine) were developed by Albaro Villegas. Ben Jones contributed the master textures, while The MD-11 Beta Team undertook extensive testing. Nicholas Wilkinson designed the Varig Brasil (Star Alliance Colors) livery, and Basten Heidema joined Albaro in preparing the documentation. All components are freeware, ensuring flight simmers can easily add a piece of Brazilian aviation heritage to their virtual hangars without cost.
