This package provides six unique Polar Air Cargo liveries, meticulously crafted for AI Aardvark’s Boeing 747-200 platform. It is optimized for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 and focuses on delivering realistic visuals, while ensuring optimal performance. Originally developed by David White, this repaint set does not include the base model. Users can find the freeware AI Aardvark 747-200 base package in the Fly Away Simulation library.

Technical Background on These Polar Air Cargo Liveries

Polar Air Cargo is known for operating freight services across global hubs. Its Boeing 747-200 fleet historically demonstrated long-range cargo capabilities with efficient high-payload performance. This repaint collection captures the distinctive branding found on actual aircraft, reflecting various registrations and subtle variations in each design. It delivers excellent representation within AI traffic environments, highlighting correct logos, color placement, and attention to detail on the fuselage.

Essential Installation Steps

  1. Add all included texture folders into the AIA_747_200_PW directory as appropriate. Note that three of the provided liveries (508, 509, and 921) require the 747-200 GE model, while 920 is suited for the 747-200F PW module. Make sure the corresponding base pack is acquired separately to enable this repaint set.
  2. Open the aircraft.cfg file from the main AI Aardvark 747-200 package. Insert the supplied [fltsim.x] entries, adjusting the numerical values sequentially, such as [fltsim.0], [fltsim.1], etc. Avoid any duplicates or missing segments in the sequence.
  3. Locate the night texture file enclosed in the package and copy it into each texture folder. This process ensures consistent night lighting across all variants.
  4. Implement suitable flight plans using your preferred traffic scheduling tool. Once assigned, these cargo aircraft will appear throughout your ai-traffic environment in a believable manner.

Performance Considerations and Design Insights

The developer designed these AI-friendly models with multiple levels of detail (LOD). In fact, this 747 package includes up to sixteen distinct LOD models, which efficiently reduce the polygon count as the aircraft recedes from view, resulting in stable frame rates even with numerous iterations active in busy airfields.

Because some high-detail GMAX aircraft do not always incorporate LOD functionality, they can place heavier demands on system resources when used as AI traffic. By contrast, AI Aardvark’s 747-200 prioritizes efficiency and still maintains visual fidelity when parked at the gate, taxiing, or climbing away.
