Rapid City Regional Airport (KRAP) gets a smarter AFCAD2 layout for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, expanding parking and refining ramps to accommodate a wider mix of aircraft. Updated taxi routes and runway logic improve traffic flow, while added ILS capability supports smoother arrivals and departures in changing winds.
Rapid City Regional Airport in western South Dakota is the focus of this freeware enhancement designed by the talented creators at SimMod Studios for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. This specialized AFCAD2 file harmonizes various airport elements to boost operational capacity, regulate traffic flow, and introduce additional navigational features.
By expanding the volume of parking spots, this modification supports more diverse aircraft operations—including smaller jets—without creating congestion on the tarmac. In many cases, new ramp areas have been added or rearranged for better alignment. Although not strictly mimicking actual parking layouts, the assigned gates and spaces ensure convenient positioning of different flight types, from single-prop planes to commuter aircraft.
Thanks to this revised AFCAD2 structure, flights in and out of Rapid City gain improved circulation. Surplus taxiways and outdated paths have been replaced or removed. Additionally, existing runways may have been modified to coordinate runway usage based on wind direction, and an Instrument Landing System (ILS) has been introduced when applicable. If the default setup lacked an ILS for each direction or did not allow multi-direction approaches, the team integrated that capacity to keep arrivals and departures smooth in variable conditions.
When using AFCAD’s fault finder on this specific airport, please disregard ISOLATED SEGMENT or NODES POSSIBLY UNCONNECTED messages. These minor discrepancies are deliberately included to refine traffic patterns or provide visually appealing taxi routes during aircraft movements.
These custom airport layouts do not strictly replicate real-world operations. Instead, the developers at SimMod Studios have leveraged FAA data from resources like AirNav as needed. However, in many instances, purely aesthetic choices led to partial or significant reconfigurations of ramps, runways, and taxiways. This approach ensures that flyers can operate realistically within the flight simulator while still enjoying an efficient flow of traffic.
Although numeric labels and distinct gate assignments are automatically assigned where possible, not all taxiways are labeled meticulously. Consequently, some default signage may no longer align with the newly arranged surfaces. Due to constraints in this version of AFCAD, sign repositioning or removal is unavailable, so slight mismatches may appear. Nonetheless, these blemishes have no adverse impact on actual taxiing or aircraft performance.
Located roughly six miles southeast of Rapid City, the airport (KRAP) serves as a gateway to the scenic Black Hills area. It often welcomes substantial tourism traffic, especially for visitors exploring Mount Rushmore and other landmarks. While real-world operational details can differ, this add-on captures the essence of Rapid City Regional Airport’s role in bringing travelers to and from one of South Dakota’s most captivating regions.
Overall, this free modification by SimMod Studios boosts your experience through well-planned additions to traffic pathways, surface design, and ILS capability. Whether departing to explore the Black Hills or arriving from cross-country adventures, pilots will appreciate the updated flow and expanded parking availability afforded by this AFCAD2 file for Rapid City Regional Airport.
