What is an aircraft boneyard or aircraft graveyard?

In real-world aviation, an aircraft boneyard, also called an aircraft graveyard, is a site where retired, surplus or temporarily inactive aircraft are stored. Some airframes are preserved for a possible return to service; others provide spare parts or are dismantled and recycled. Dry desert locations are favoured because low humidity slows corrosion.

Is an aircraft boneyard the same as a graveyard?

There is no universal technical distinction between an aircraft boneyard and an aircraft graveyard. Both are informal terms rather than regulatory classifications, although graveyard often implies that the aircraft have reached the end of their lives.

The common image of rows of abandoned aeroplanes is misleading. Many facilities are managed storage and maintenance operations. The best-known example is the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona, which stores and processes US military and government aircraft. Commercial facilities perform similar work with airliners, regional aircraft and business jets.

What happens to aircraft in a boneyard?

An aircraft's fate depends on why it was stored, its maintenance history, market demand and the cost of returning it to service.

Aircraft kept for possible reuse are preserved according to their maintenance requirements. Intakes, exhausts and other openings may be sealed; engines and fluid systems receive storage treatment; windows and sensitive surfaces are covered; and periodic inspections check for corrosion, leaks, contamination and animal damage.

A common mistake is to assume that any intact-looking part can be installed on another aircraft. Components used on a certified aircraft require the correct identity, maintenance status and traceability. Appearance alone does not make a reclaimed component airworthy.

Why are aircraft boneyards often in deserts?

Desert sites offer low humidity, limited rainfall, large areas of relatively inexpensive land and firm ground. At some locations, hard-packed soil such as caliche can support parked aircraft without requiring paved stands beneath every airframe.

Dry air slows corrosion but does not eliminate deterioration. Heat, ultraviolet light, dust, temperature changes, wind, birds and rodents can still damage tyres, seals, paint, wiring and interiors. Proper preservation matters even in Arizona.

Not every group of parked aircraft is a boneyard. Airlines may temporarily store fleets at ordinary airports during a fall in demand, while maintenance bases often hold aircraft awaiting work. Museums preserve aircraft for display rather than parts recovery or disposal.

Can an aircraft from a boneyard fly again?

Yes, provided it was stored in a recoverable condition and can meet all applicable airworthiness requirements. Before flight, engineers must review its records, inspect the structure and systems, address corrosion, complete overdue maintenance and directives, replace expired or life-limited items, service fluids and test the aircraft.

Storage time alone does not decide the outcome. A well-preserved aircraft with complete records may be viable after years on the ground, while a newer airframe that has been heavily cannibalised, damaged or poorly documented may be uneconomical to restore. Calendar-limited components continue to age while the aircraft is parked.

Can you visit or explore an aircraft boneyard?

Most active boneyards are controlled military or private industrial sites, not public attractions. Authorised tours or viewing opportunities may sometimes be offered, but access arrangements change and visitors should never enter private or restricted land without permission.
