Yes. Several aircraft types have accumulated operational service without a fatal crash. The Airbus A340 is a prominent large-airliner example: it has suffered hull losses, but no fatal accident. Any accurate claim needs a cut-off date and clear rules covering variants, test flights, ground deaths, sabotage and combat losses.

Which aircraft types have had no fatal crashes?
Using an August 2026 cut-off, prominent jet-airliner examples include the Airbus A340, Airbus A380 and Boeing 717.

The A340 is the strongest familiar example because it has accumulated substantial long-haul service since the 1990s. Air France Flight 358 overran the runway at Toronto in 2005 and was destroyed by fire, yet all 309 occupants survived. Calling the A340 fatality-free is accurate; saying it has never crashed is not.
This is not an exhaustive list. Numerous newer, specialised and low-production aircraft also have no recorded fatal crash, but a type with a handful of aircraft and limited flying time provides little statistical evidence about safety.
What counts as a fatal crash?
A fatal crash normally means an occurrence involving the aircraft that directly causes at least one death. Under common accident-investigation conventions, a fatal injury includes one resulting in death within 30 days of the accident.
- Occupant and ground deaths: A crash may be fatal even if everyone aboard survives, because a person on the ground was killed.
- Test and demonstration flights: These must be included when claiming a type has never had any fatal crash, rather than merely no fatal passenger-service crash.
- Sabotage and combat: Hostile acts may be excluded from accident statistics, although readers using the ordinary meaning of “crash” may expect them to be counted.
- Type versus variant: A particular variant may have a clean record even though another member of the broader aircraft family does not.
- Medical or unrelated deaths: A passenger dying from natural causes aboard an aircraft does not make the flight a fatal aircraft accident.

Does a hull loss mean people died?
No. A hull loss means the aircraft was destroyed, damaged beyond economical repair or otherwise permanently lost; it does not describe the human outcome.
A runway overrun followed by fire may become a hull loss with every occupant surviving. Conversely, an aircraft can be repaired after an accident that caused a fatality. A mistake we see constantly is treating hull-loss totals as fatal-crash totals.
Does having no fatal crashes make an aircraft the safest?
No. A zero-fatality record is encouraging, but it does not by itself prove that an aircraft is safer than every type with a fatal accident.
The meaningful comparison is fatalities or fatal accidents against exposure: departures, sectors, passengers carried and flight hours. Fleet age, fleet size, route structure, weather, operator standards and the kinds of airports served also affect the result. One fatal accident among millions of flights may provide more safety evidence than zero accidents among a few thousand.

How should a no-fatal-crash claim be checked?
A defensible claim defines its scope before examining the accident record.
- Name the exact type: State whether the claim covers one variant, a certified type or an entire marketing family.
- Define fatal: Decide whether ground deaths, test crews and deaths following accident injuries are included.
- Set the operational scope: Include passenger, cargo, training, ferry, test and demonstration flights unless the wording expressly limits them.
- Separate the event categories: Check fatal accidents, non-fatal crashes, hull losses, hostile acts and ground incidents independently.
- Add a dated cut-off: Write “no fatal crash recorded through August 2026”, not an undated claim that the type will never suffer one.
The precise answer is therefore yes: aircraft types with no fatal crashes do exist, and the Airbus A340 is a notable mature example. That record describes what has happened over a defined period; it is not a guarantee about future flights or a complete safety ranking.
