Best Cessna 172 add-on for MSFS 2024?
For the most realistic steam-gauge Cessna 172 in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, we recommend the WBSim C172SP Classic Enhancement, but only in a release explicitly marked for MSFS 2024 and with its required default aircraft installed. For G1000 flying, the included C172 is the better, safer choice; it needs no replacement add-on.
Which Cessna 172 should you choose in MSFS 2024?
Choose the WBSim enhancement for analogue cockpit procedures and deeper systems; choose the included C172 for modern G1000 training and dependable native compatibility.
| Option | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| WBSim C172SP Classic Enhancement | Steam-gauge flying, piston-engine management and more detailed aircraft procedures | It is an enhancement, not a standalone aircraft, and must explicitly support MSFS 2024 |
| Included Cessna 172 G1000 | Glass-cockpit training, IFR practice and trouble-free use across supported platforms | Less focused on the analogue C172 experience |
The WBSim package is aimed at pilots who care about how the aeroplane behaves and is operated rather than simply wanting another exterior model. Its value comes from expanding the stock steam-gauge C172's systems and handling, making it the stronger option for realistic circuit work, checklists and traditional instrument scans.
It is not the right purchase if your main goal is learning the G1000. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 already supplies a native glass-cockpit C172, so adding an analogue enhancement would move you away from the avionics you want to practise.
What must you check before buying the WBSim C172?
The exact simulator compatibility and donor-aircraft requirement matter more than the product name.
- Look for explicit MSFS 2024 support. A package working in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 does not guarantee that every gauge, system or flight-model change will work correctly in MSFS 2024.
- Confirm the required base aircraft. The enhancement modifies the simulator's steam-gauge C172SP Classic; it does not create that aeroplane by itself. Do not assume that owning the standard G1000 C172 satisfies this dependency.
- Check your MSFS edition. Aircraft entitlements differ between editions. Our breakdown of aircraft included with MSFS 2024 can help establish whether the required C172 variant is already in your library.
- Check platform availability. PC users can install compatible externally supplied packages, while Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 users are limited to add-ons distributed for their console through the in-simulator Marketplace. Availability on one platform does not guarantee availability on another.
A mistake we see constantly is copying an older MSFS 2020 package into MSFS 2024 because the folder structure looks familiar. Backward compatibility varies by add-on, and an aircraft enhancement tied to a default model is more vulnerable to changed systems or package dependencies than a simple livery.
Is the default MSFS 2024 Cessna 172 good enough?
Yes—the included C172 G1000 is the best choice for most pilots who want to start flying immediately without managing dependencies or third-party compatibility.
- Use the included G1000 model for modern avionics, GPS navigation, instrument procedures and general flight training.
- Use the WBSim Classic Enhancement when analogue instruments, engine handling and traditional cockpit workflows are the priority.
- Choose a tailwheel, bush or engine conversion only when that specialised configuration is the point; it is not a direct replacement for a normal training C172.
The aeroplane itself is also an excellent first trainer because it is stable without hiding poor control inputs. Our guide to using the Cessna 172 as a beginner aircraft explains what to practise before paying for additional system depth.
Why is the C172 add-on not appearing or working?
A missing donor aircraft, an incompatible MSFS 2020 build or a conflicting C172 modification causes most installation failures.
- Verify that the required steam-gauge base aircraft is available under the same simulator account and edition.
- Remove older copies of the enhancement before installing a replacement build.
- On PC, check that the actual package folder is not buried inside an extra nested directory in the
Communityfolder. - Temporarily remove other C172 flight-model, cockpit, sound and systems modifications, then test with only the enhancement enabled.
- On console, confirm that the package is licensed and installed for that specific platform rather than merely owned elsewhere.
Our aircraft installation instructions for PC and console cover the correct delivery methods. If the package still does not appear in the aircraft selector, work through these checks for missing add-on aircraft and dependencies.
