Best free Boeing 777 add-ons for X-Plane 10 and 11?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Compare the best free Boeing 777 add-ons for X-Plane 10 and 11, including AI aircraft, flyable models, liveries and installation fixes.

For X-Plane 10 and 11, the strongest free Boeing 777 option is the XPFW B777 AI Pack when you want realistic traffic. Flyable freeware choices are older and much less complete; many convincing 777 downloads are actually AI-only models or liveries that require a separate base aircraft.

Which free Boeing 777 add-ons are worth using?

The right choice depends on whether you want to fly the aircraft, see it as AI traffic or repaint an aircraft you already own.

XPFW B777 AI Pack

Our first choice for believable 777 traffic is the free XPFW Boeing 777 AI package. It provides 777-200LR and 777-300ER models, multiple liveries and AI-oriented performance for X-Plane 10 and 11.

This is the best fit when the 777 will be parked at a gate or operated by X-Plane's traffic system. It should not be mistaken for a full cockpit aircraft: an AI model prioritises exterior appearance and efficient traffic operation rather than a functional flight deck, FMC or detailed systems.

Older flyable freeware 777 models

A complete freeware 777 is the only suitable category if you want to sit in the cockpit without buying a separate base aircraft. Our catalogue of X-Plane heavy aircraft downloads is the practical place to compare older widebodies and related 777 files.

Check that a download explicitly contains a complete aircraft and supports your X-Plane generation. Older freeware can still be enjoyable, but a realistic exterior does not guarantee working LNAV/VNAV, accurate autopilot mode logic, a detailed FMC or authentic electrical and hydraulic systems. We would not describe the free X-Plane 10 and 11 options as study-level 777 simulations.

Boeing 777 liveries

A repaint changes textures only; it does not supply the aeroplane. For example, this Air New Zealand 777-200ER texture set requires the Ramzzess B777-200ER to be installed already.

This distinction causes many failed installations. Before downloading a repaint, match the developer, 777 variant and base-aircraft version—not merely the words “Boeing 777”. Textures made for one model rarely align correctly with another model's fuselage, doors, engines and windows.

Is the XPFW 777 AI Pack flyable?

The XPFW pack is intended for AI traffic, not as a detailed aircraft for the user to fly. X-Plane may expose some AI aircraft in its aircraft selector, but that does not turn their simplified cockpit and systems into a complete simulation.

Use it when exterior accuracy, airline variety and traffic performance matter. Choose a complete aircraft package when cockpit operation matters, and judge realism by its flight deck, flight model and system simulation rather than screenshots of the exterior.

How do you install a Boeing 777 add-on in X-Plane?

  1. Extract the archive fully. Do not try to run the aircraft from inside the compressed download.
  2. Identify the package type. A complete aircraft normally contains an .acf file and supporting object, texture and cockpit content. A repaint mainly contains texture files, while an AI package is documented for traffic use.
  3. Install complete aircraft under the Aircraft folder. Place the extracted package inside X-Plane 10/Aircraft/ or X-Plane 11/Aircraft/, preserving its internal folder structure.
  4. Configure AI models through X-Plane's traffic controls. The precise screen differs between X-Plane 10 and 11; installing the files alone does not necessarily add the 777 to an active traffic flight.
  5. Put repaints in the matching aircraft's liveries folder. Keep the supplied folder structure and confirm that the base aircraft is the exact model named by the repaint author.
  6. Restart X-Plane and test one change at a time. This makes missing files, incompatible plugins and incorrect folder placement much easier to isolate.

Will an X-Plane 10 Boeing 777 work in X-Plane 11?

An X-Plane 10 aircraft may load in X-Plane 11, but loading successfully is not proof of full compatibility. Exterior models and basic controls often survive better than custom avionics, plugin-driven systems, sounds and cockpit displays.

Keep an untouched copy before testing an older aircraft in X-Plane 11. If the cockpit is dead or displays are blank, inspect Log.txt in the main X-Plane directory for plugin-loading errors. An aircraft made specifically for X-Plane 11 should not be assumed to work backwards in X-Plane 10.

Why is the 777 missing or displaying incorrectly?

  • It does not appear in the aircraft selector: confirm that the archive was extracted and that the installed package contains an .acf file. A livery by itself will not appear as an aircraft.
  • The aircraft is white or has scrambled textures: the repaint is probably in the wrong folder or was created for a different 777 model or variant.
  • The cockpit has few working controls: you may have opened an AI model rather than a flyable aircraft.
  • Displays or custom systems remain blank: the aircraft may depend on an incompatible or missing plugin. Check Log.txt rather than repeatedly reinstalling the textures.
  • X-Plane 11 behaves differently from X-Plane 10: treat the package as version-specific unless its documentation explicitly supports both simulators.
