Learn how to charge a Meta Quest 2 headset, recharge or replace its controller AA batteries, read charge lights and avoid common USB-C mistakes.
Charge the Meta Quest 2 headset through its USB-C port using a compatible cable and mains power adaptor. Its Oculus Touch controllers do not charge from the headset and have no USB charging port: each uses one removable AA battery, which you replace or recharge externally if it is a rechargeable type.
For general VR use and PC flight simulation alike, the headset and controllers have completely separate power systems.
How do I charge the Meta Quest 2 headset?
The Quest 2 headset charges through the USB-C socket on its left side and normally charges fastest while switched off or sleeping.
- Check the port and cable: Make sure the USB-C plug, cable and headset socket are dry, undamaged and free of debris.
- Connect a suitable adaptor: Use the original cable and mains adaptor if available, or a reputable compatible USB-C charger. A charger advertising a higher maximum output will not necessarily charge the headset faster.
- Plug in the headset: Insert the connector fully without forcing it. Remove any third-party facial interface or strap part that prevents the plug seating correctly.
- Check the status light: An orange light indicates charging; green means the battery is charged. A red light indicates a very low battery. A completely flat headset may need to remain connected for several minutes before showing signs of life.
- Leave it uncovered: Place the headset on a stable surface with its ventilation openings clear. Charging can pause if the battery becomes too hot or cold.
A near-empty Quest 2 commonly needs roughly two and a half hours with a suitable mains charger, although battery age, temperature, the power source and background use can change that time.
Can Oculus Quest 2 controllers be plugged in to charge?
Quest 2 Touch controllers cannot be plugged in because the standard controllers have no charging socket.
Each controller takes one AA battery beneath its sliding battery cover. Replace a depleted alkaline cell, or remove a rechargeable AA cell and charge it in the charger designed for that battery chemistry. Never attempt to recharge a disposable alkaline AA battery.
- Remove the battery cover from the controller handle.
- Take out the depleted AA cell and inspect the compartment for corrosion or leakage.
- Insert a fresh or externally charged AA, matching the positive and negative markings inside the compartment.
- Refit the cover and wake the controller with one of its buttons.
NiMH rechargeable AAs usually work, but their lower nominal voltage can make the on-screen battery reading behave differently from an alkaline cell. Charging docks use their own rechargeable packs, contacts and replacement covers; those parts must be used only with their matching dock.

How do I check Quest 2 battery levels?
The headset battery level and separate left- and right-controller levels appear in the Quest interface when the controllers are connected.

The controllers have no standard charging light because ordinary AA batteries are not charged inside them.
Can I use Meta Quest 2 while it is charging?
You can use a Quest 2 while connected to power, but the battery may still drain if the USB source supplies less power than the headset consumes.

What should I do if my Quest 2 will not charge?
First test another known-good cable, compatible mains adaptor and wall socket, then let an overheated or very cold headset return to room temperature.
Inspect the USB-C socket under good light, but do not scrape it with metal tools. If the battery is deeply discharged, leave the headset connected for at least 30 minutes before attempting to start it. A damaged connector, liquid exposure, swelling or unusual heat requires professional attention rather than repeated charging attempts.
