Check which KDEN runways are in use using ATIS, ATC, airport charts and weather, with practical guidance for pilots, spotters and flight simmers.
At Denver International Airport (KDEN), check the latest ATIS first: it reports the landing and departing runways, approach type and relevant closures. Then confirm the assignment from Denver Approach, Tower or your departure clearance. METAR winds suggest the likely flow, but they do not prove which of KDEN’s several runways is actually in use.
In Aviation & Real-World Flying, “active runway” is only shorthand at an airport this large. KDEN can use several runways simultaneously, with different runways assigned to arrivals and departures.
How do you check KDEN runway use step by step?
- Obtain the latest ATIS. Tune the published arrival or departure ATIS as appropriate, or retrieve digital ATIS through supported aircraft or operational services. - Identify each runway’s role. Listen for the approaches in use, landing runways and departure runways. Do not stop after hearing the first runway number; KDEN may name several.
- Confirm your own assignment. For an arriving aircraft, the approach clearance and subsequent Tower clearance are decisive. For a departure, use the runway in the clearance and taxi instructions. ATC can change it after the ATIS was recorded.
- Match the runway to the diagram. Use the KDEN airport diagram, runway layout and published frequencies to distinguish the parallel runways and understand the taxi route. The diagram shows where runways are, not which ones are active.
- Recheck after a significant update. A wind shift, runway inspection, closure or traffic-flow change can produce a new ATIS. If ATC mentions a newer information letter, obtain it when workload permits.
The ATIS is the best airport-wide operational snapshot, while an ATC clearance is authoritative for a particular aircraft. “Expect” wording is planning information and is not permission to approach, land, enter or depart from that runway.

A common mistake is choosing the runway most closely aligned with the METAR wind and calling it active. That is a reasonable prediction before receiving operational information, but it is not confirmation.
Why can KDEN have several runways in use?
KDEN has six physical runways: 7/25, 8/26, 16L/34R, 16R/34L, 17L/35R and 17R/35L. Its parallel runway layout allows ATC to distribute arrivals and departures across more than one runway when traffic, weather and separation requirements permit.
Remember that reciprocal numbers identify opposite ends of the same pavement. Runway 34R, for example, is the opposite end of runway 16L. When matching an ATIS report to the airport diagram, use the named landing or departure end rather than treating both designations as separate strips.
For plane spotting, watch the sustained pattern rather than one aircraft. Arrivals may be concentrated on one group of runways while departures use another, and the configuration can change while you are observing it.
How should flight simmers check KDEN runway use?
Use the ATIS and ATC belonging to the simulation session, not automatically the real airport’s configuration. Built-in ATC, an online controller and real-world KDEN can all select different runways because their weather, traffic and closure data may not match.
- Flying with built-in ATC: tune the simulator’s KDEN ATIS, then follow its clearance even if live real-world traffic is using the opposite direction.
- Flying with human online ATC: use the controller’s ATIS and instructions. These override conflicting built-in AI traffic or ATIS.
- Flying without ATC: use the simulated surface wind, reported traffic and runway availability to choose a safe flow. That choice does not establish which runways real KDEN is using.

AI aircraft provide only a clue. Traffic add-ons, stale navigation data or scenery with outdated runway settings can send AI traffic somewhere different from ATC, so the clearance and session-specific ATIS remain the better references.
