Which departure procedure will ATC assign at KDEN?

KDEN commonly uses published RNAV SIDs that distribute aircraft towards route-specific departure gates while keeping traffic organised around Denver’s busy airspace. A later climb and maintain cancels published altitude restrictions; published speed restrictions remain unless separately cancelled.

How does KDEN choose a departure runway?

ATC selects the runway configuration from wind, weather, traffic flow, closures and operational demand, while the pilot remains responsible for accepting a runway that meets aircraft limitations. At KDEN, several runways may be active simultaneously, so “the active runway” can mean an entire operating configuration rather than one strip.

KDEN has six runways: four broadly north–south runways, 16L/34R, 16R/34L, 17L/35R and 17R/35L, plus east–west runways 7/25 and 8/26. Runway 16R/34L is 16,000 feet long; the other five are 12,000 feet. Those figures do not replace the declared distances, intersection data and restrictions applicable to the actual departure.

Why does Denver’s elevation affect take-off performance?

KDEN sits at approximately 5,434 feet above mean sea level, so take-off performance can be limiting even with its unusually long runways. High temperature increases density altitude, reducing engine or propeller performance and requiring more runway and time to climb.

Calculate performance for the actual weight, pressure altitude, temperature, wind, runway condition, slope, configuration and available distance. An intersection departure means using the distance available from that intersection, not the runway’s full published length. Terrain rises sharply west of the airport towards the Front Range. Check every published climb gradient and do not turn towards the mountains early because the cleared route appears direct in the flight plan. To convert a charted gradient to vertical speed, multiply feet per nautical mile by groundspeed in nautical miles per minute: for example, 400 ft/NM at 150 knots groundspeed requires about 1,000 feet per minute. Advise ATC before departure if the aircraft cannot meet the required gradient.

How should pilots brief a KDEN departure?

  1. Collect the live information. Review ATIS, NOTAMs, runway condition information, the airport diagram and the latest SID chart.
  2. Break down the clearance. Identify the SID, runway transition, route transition, altitude instruction, departure frequency and any amendment to the filed route.

VFR pilots should expect specific Class B, ground, runway, heading and altitude instructions rather than simply departing towards their destination. ATC will normally use headings or visual routing instead of an IFR SID unless a published procedure is specifically assigned.

Listen to ATIS, obtain the required clearance, read back runway and hold-short instructions exactly, and be prepared for wake-turbulence spacing behind large aircraft. Remain on the assigned heading and altitude until amended, and do not change frequency until instructed by tower or departure control.
