Disengage the Cessna 172 autopilot in X-Plane 12 by yoke, G1000 AP key or mapped control, with fixes for trim, warnings and bad bindings.
To disengage the Cessna 172 autopilot in X-Plane 12, press the red autopilot-disconnect switch on the pilot’s yoke. In the G1000-equipped aircraft, the AP key also disengages it. For hardware control, bind a button to an autopilot servo-off command, then verify that the AP annunciation disappears before hand-flying.
The correct autopilot disconnect procedure
A clean handover requires more than pressing the switch: be ready to hold the aeroplane’s attitude and correct its trim.
- Grip the controls lightly. Do not make a large control movement while the servos are still engaged.
- Press the yoke’s autopilot-disconnect switch once. In the G1000 C172, pressing the autopilot controller’s AP key is an alternative.
- Check the annunciation. The AP indication should disappear. A brief disconnect tone is normal.
- Maintain the existing attitude. The aeroplane may pitch or roll if the autopilot was holding against poor trim.
- Re-trim for hand flight. Relieve control pressure rather than chasing the initial movement with large inputs.
Pressing HDG, NAV, APR or ALT does not necessarily disconnect the entire autopilot. Those keys select or cancel individual guidance modes; use the disconnect switch or AP key to release the servos.
How do I map an autopilot-disconnect button?
A dedicated joystick or yoke binding is the best option because it remains available without changing the cockpit view.
- Open X-Plane 12’s Joystick settings and select the physical button you want to use.
- Search the available commands for
autopilotorservos. - Choose a command described as disconnecting or switching the autopilot servos off. Command wording can vary between X-Plane builds and aircraft.
- Avoid a generic toggle command when a dedicated off or disconnect command is available. A bouncing switch or accidental double press can turn a toggled function back on.
- Test the binding in level flight and confirm that the cockpit AP annunciation extinguishes.
The same approach works through the Keyboard settings, although a yoke button is quicker during an approach. Add-on C172s can intercept their own commands, so use the aircraft’s cockpit disconnect switch if X-Plane’s generic servo command does nothing.
Why are the flight-director bars still visible?
The flight director can remain active after the autopilot servos have disconnected, so visible command bars do not mean the autopilot is still flying.
On the G1000, look for the AP status rather than judging by the magenta command bars alone. The selected lateral and vertical modes may continue supplying guidance for manual flight. What should I do if the aircraft moves after disconnecting?
An abrupt pitch change usually means the C172 was not trimmed for the attitude the autopilot had been holding.

Do not use the avionics master as the normal way to stop the autopilot; that also removes equipment you may need for navigation and communication.
