What is the fastest aircraft in each category?
The X-43A holds the broad powered-aircraft record, while the X-15 and SR-71 lead the categories most people have in mind.

The X-43A was carried aloft and accelerated by a Pegasus rocket booster before separating. Its own scramjet then produced powered hypersonic flight for roughly ten seconds. It did not take off independently or land, but those limitations do not invalidate its air-breathing aircraft speed record.
Spacecraft returning from orbit and some hypersonic glide vehicles travel faster. They are normally excluded because orbital re-entry, ballistic descent and unpowered atmospheric gliding are not the same record category as sustained powered aircraft flight.
Why is the X-15 often called the fastest aircraft ever?
The X-15 is the fastest aircraft ever flown by a pilot under power, which is the record usually intended by the question.
On the record flight, Major William J. “Pete” Knight flew the modified X-15A-2 to Mach 6.72. A B-52 mothership carried it to launch altitude, after which its rocket engine accelerated it through the upper atmosphere. The X-15 later returned for an unpowered landing on a dry lakebed.

Why do the Mach and mph figures sometimes disagree?
Mach number depends on the local speed of sound, which changes mainly with atmospheric temperature, so it cannot be converted using one fixed mph multiplier.
A frequent error is multiplying a high-altitude Mach figure by the sea-level speed of sound. That produces a different result from the historically recorded velocity. Published figures are also rounded differently. Mach 9.6 and “about 7,000 mph” are appropriate descriptions of the X-43A record, while 4,520 mph and Mach 6.72 are the standard figures for the X-15 flight.
Is the SR-71 the fastest operational aircraft?
The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird remains the fastest crewed aircraft to have entered operational service.
Its 1976 record of 2,193.2 mph was far below the experimental X-15 and X-43A, but the Blackbird could take off from a runway, fly operational reconnaissance missions and land for reuse. That makes it the meaningful answer when someone asks for the fastest production or operational piloted aircraft rather than a one-off research vehicle.
