Where can I find and install fighter jet add-ons for FSX?

You can find freeware military fighter jets in our FSX military-aircraft library, then install a complete package in the SimObjects\Airplanes folder of boxed FSX or FSX: Steam Edition. Check whether the download is a full aircraft or only a repaint: repaints require the named base model.

Where can I download military fighter jets for FSX?

Our dedicated military-aircraft section contains complete fighters, repaints, panels and related files for FSX. Read each description and included documentation before installing, because a screenshot of a finished jet does not mean the archive contains the flyable base aircraft.

For the simplest installation, choose a file explicitly described as a complete or full package for FSX. For example, this complete F-16 with its own model, virtual cockpit, panel, sounds and effects does not require you to locate a separate base model first.

Is the download a complete fighter or only a repaint?

Choose a complete package unless you already have the exact base aircraft required by a repaint.

Prefer a package made specifically for FSX. Older FS2004 fighters can suffer from missing gauges, opaque cockpit windows, broken animations or unsupported model features even when the exterior aircraft loads.

How do I install a complete fighter jet in FSX?

A complete fighter belongs in the active FSX installation’s SimObjects\Airplanes directory, with any supplied gauges and effects copied to their matching folders.

1. Extract the archive first. Unzip it into a temporary working folder rather than placing the compressed file inside FSX. Read the supplied installation notes.
2. Locate the active FSX root. A typical boxed path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X. A common Steam path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX, but a custom Steam library may be elsewhere. The correct root contains fsx.exe.
3. Identify the actual aircraft folder. Open the extracted folders until you find aircraft.cfg. That file should end up directly inside FSX\SimObjects\Airplanes\AircraftName. An extra folder layer is one of the most common installation errors.
4. Copy the aircraft. Place the complete aircraft folder under SimObjects\Airplanes. If the archive already reproduces the FSX directory structure, merge its contents into the matching folders instead.
5. Install supporting files. Copy supplied effects into Effects and gauge files into Gauges, following the documentation. Do not create accidental paths such as Effects\Effects, and back up any existing file before replacing it.
6. Start FSX and select the aircraft. Fighter jets appear in the aircraft-selection screen, not under the Add-ons menu. Enable the option to show all variations and search by the manufacturer, model or variation stated in the download notes.

If the package uses an executable installer, point it at the folder containing fsx.exe. Older installers sometimes propose the boxed-edition path even when FSX: Steam Edition is installed elsewhere. How do I install an FSX fighter repaint?

A repaint must be added to the exact base aircraft it was designed for; the texture folder alone cannot create a flyable jet.

For example, this grey US Navy F/A-18 repaint requires the FSX Acceleration F/A-18 base aircraft. A different Hornet model with a similar name is not necessarily compatible because texture mapping varies between models.

1. Install and test the required base aircraft. Confirm that it appears and flies before adding the repaint.
2. Copy the texture folder. Place a folder such as texture.grey inside the base aircraft’s folder.
3. Back up aircraft.cfg. Add the supplied [fltsim.n] block and replace n with the next unused number.
4. Check the texture reference. A line such as texture=grey must correspond to the folder named texture.grey. The title= value must also be unique.

Do not replace the entire aircraft.cfg unless the instructions explicitly require it. Doing so can erase existing liveries and configuration changes.

Why is the fighter jet missing from the aircraft list?

A missing fighter usually means FSX cannot find a valid aircraft configuration or the add-on was installed into the wrong simulator folder.

• Extra folder nesting: FSX sees AircraftName\AnotherFolder\aircraft.cfg instead of finding the configuration directly inside the aircraft folder.
• Repaint without its base model: A texture-only download cannot appear independently.
• Wrong FSX installation: The files were copied into boxed FSX while Steam Edition is being launched, or an old installer selected an inactive path.
• Broken repaint entry: Duplicate [fltsim.n] numbers, a repeated title= value or an incorrect texture= line can hide the variation.
• Aircraft-selection filters: The jet may be listed under an unexpected manufacturer or publisher. Show all variations before assuming the installation failed.
• Wrong simulator version: A package intended only for another simulator may have incompatible models or gauges despite using a similar folder structure.

Do FSX fighter add-ons have working weapons?

FSX has no native combat or damage system, so most fighter add-ons provide visual weapon loads, animations or effects rather than functional air-to-air or air-to-ground combat. Treat any claim about working weapons as package-specific and check its documentation for required modules or control assignments.

What if the cockpit gauges are black or missing?

A visible exterior with a blank panel usually points to missing or incompatible gauges rather than a bad aircraft-folder installation. Confirm that supplied gauge files were copied to Gauges, accept security prompts only for modules from a package you trust, and check the documentation for dependencies. Some legacy gauges simply do not work correctly in every FSX installation.
