Remove the black box around the mouse cursor in FSX with fixes for full-screen mode, DX10 Preview, ENB/ReShade, pointer trails and GPU settings.
To remove a black box around the mouse cursor in FSX or FSX: Steam Edition, first toggle windowed and full-screen mode with Alt+Enter. If it returns, disable graphics injectors and overlays, turn off DirectX 10 Preview and Windows pointer trails, then reset forced GPU settings. This is usually a display conflict, not a missing texture.
What causes a black box around the FSX cursor?
A rectangle that moves precisely with the pointer comes from the cursor or display-rendering path. A mistake we see constantly is treating it as damaged aircraft or scenery; those textures cannot normally create a box that follows the mouse everywhere.
| When the box appears | Likely cause | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| Only in full-screen mode | Display-mode, resolution or overlay conflict | Press Alt+Enter |
| After installing ENB or ReShade | Graphics injector or proxy DLL | Disable the injector temporarily |
| Only with DirectX 10 Preview | DX10 shader or driver conflict | Return to the normal DX9 mode |
| Only over one add-on panel | Panel or gauge compatibility problem | Test a default aircraft |
| In FSX and other applications | Windows pointer or graphics-driver setting | Disable pointer trails and restore the default cursor |
How do I fix the black cursor box in FSX?
- Reset the display mode. Press
Alt+Enter, wait for FSX to redraw, and test the pointer. If necessary, toggle back once more. Our explanation of testing FSX in windowed and full-screen modes covers the related resolution and focus settings. On a multi-monitor system, also test FSX on the primary display at its native resolution. - Close overlays completely. Disable the Steam in-game overlay for FSX: Steam Edition, along with recording, performance-monitoring or GPU overlays. Restart FSX after doing so; merely hiding an overlay may leave its rendering hook active.
- Test without ENB or ReShade. If the problem began after installing a graphics injector, close FSX and disable that package using its own instructions. If it deliberately placed a proxy file such as
d3d9.dllbesidefsx.exe, back up and rename only that identified add-on file for one test. Never remove similarly named files from Windows system folders. See our ENB installation and fault-isolation notes for the files and conflicts involved. - Turn off DirectX 10 Preview. Open FSX's display settings, select the Graphics tab and clear
Preview DirectX 10where that option is shown. Restart the simulator. If the box disappears, use the normal DX9 renderer as the stable baseline before reintroducing any DX10 shader changes. - Disable Windows pointer effects. Open Windows Mouse Properties, choose Pointer Options and clear
Display pointer trails. Select a standard Windows pointer scheme and disable pointer shadow as another test. Large, animated and high-contrast cursor schemes can expose faults that the default pointer does not. - Restore the GPU profile. Reset the application profile for
fsx.exeto its defaults. During diagnosis, leave anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering under application control and disable forced sharpening, post-processing and frame overlays. Change one setting at a time so the actual cause remains identifiable. - Try a stock aircraft and panel. Load a default aircraft at a default airport and compare its virtual cockpit and 2-D panel. If the cursor is normal there, repair or remove the affected add-on rather than altering the entire FSX installation.
- Rebuild the FSX configuration. Close FSX, enter
%APPDATA%\Microsoftin the Windows Run box, and find the active FSX or FSX-SE configuration folder. Rename the active.cfgfile to keep it as a backup, then launch FSX so it creates a clean one. Boxed FSX and Steam Edition can use different folder or file names, especially when installed side by side, so use the file whose timestamp changed on the last run rather than editing both blindly.
If the artefact survives a clean configuration in both display modes, reinstall or roll back the graphics driver according to when the problem began. A fault that appeared immediately after a driver change is better tested with the previous stable driver than with further FSX file changes.
Which fix should I keep after the box disappears?
Keep the smallest change that removes the fault. Windowed-only problems point to full-screen resolution or overlays; injector-only problems require that injector to remain disabled or be reconfigured; DX10-only problems are best left on DX9. If a default aircraft works, preserve your global settings and repair only the affected panel or gauge package.
What if the black shape is not attached to the cursor?
A completely dark simulator view needs the separate FSX black-screen checks. Squares attached to exhaust, smoke or contrails instead indicate an effects-texture or transparency problem, covered by our repair steps for black smoke and contrail squares.
