Fix Microsoft Flight Simulator stuck on the loading screen on Xbox with the right steps for Quick Resume, updates, cache, add-ons and reinstalls.
Microsoft Flight Simulator usually sticks on the Xbox loading screen because Quick Resume has preserved a stale online session, an update or content package is incomplete, Xbox authentication has failed, storage is too full, or cached content is damaged. Fully quit the simulator first, then work through updates, network, storage and cache checks before reinstalling.
These checks apply to installed copies of Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020) and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 on Xbox Series X|S. Menu wording can differ slightly between the two editions.
Why does Microsoft Flight Simulator freeze while loading?
The point at which loading stops usually identifies the underlying problem.
| What happens | Likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| The simulator resumes and immediately freezes | Stale Quick Resume session | Quit the title completely |
| It stops around sign-in or Checking for Updates | Xbox authentication, network or service problem | Test the connection and sign in again |
| The problem began after an update | Incomplete package, insufficient storage or damaged cache | Check updates and free space |
| The main menu works, but a flight will not load | Aircraft, airport, scenery or streamed-data problem | Test with default content |
| Only one Xbox profile is affected | Local or cloud-synchronised profile data | Reset the local copy of the save |
How do I fix the Xbox loading screen?
Use the following order so that you do not download the entire simulator again for a temporary session or account problem.
Quit Microsoft Flight Simulator completely. Press the Xbox button, highlight the simulator, press the Menu button and choose Quit. Returning to Home is not enough because Quick Resume may preserve the failed session.
Relaunch it once. If it still hangs, restart the console from its power menu. A full shutdown is the next step if a normal restart makes no difference.
Check the Xbox connection and signed-in profile. Run the console's network test, confirm that the correct profile owns the game or has the required subscription access, then sign out and back in. Do not reinstall while Xbox or simulator online services are unavailable; a new installation will encounter the same authentication failure.
If loading stops at sign-in, cloud synchronisation or Checking for Updates, follow our Xbox sign-in and entitlement checks. If the simulator reaches the menu but reports that it is offline, use our Xbox offline-mode troubleshooting.
Install every pending update. Open My games & apps, check the Updates section and install updates for both Microsoft Flight Simulator and the Xbox system. Finish or remove any stalled optional-content update shown in the queue.
Do not interrupt an active package installation or cloud synchronisation. An incomplete base-game update can leave the simulator repeatedly stopping at the same loading screen.
Free storage space and check the installation drive. The console needs working space beyond the displayed download size for unpacking and updating large packages. Remove or move unused games if the internal drive is nearly full.
The Xbox Series X|S-optimised version must run from internal storage or a compatible Storage Expansion Card, not ordinary USB storage.
Test without recent optional content. If the problem started after installing an aircraft, airport, scenery package or World Update, remove that item first. Use Content Manager if the main menu opens, or inspect individually listed content under Manage game and add-ons.
When only the flight-loading bar freezes, select a default aircraft and a non-add-on airport. If that combination loads, the base simulator is working and the original aircraft or scenery is the likely culprit. Testing once with Online Functionality disabled can also reveal a streamed-scenery or connection problem.
Clear damaged cached content. If you can reach the settings, delete or disable the rolling cache and try again. Our platform-specific rolling-cache instructions explain the relevant controls.
If startup never reaches the menu, open Manage game and add-ons, select Saved data and clear Reserved space. This can remove cached and downloaded package data, so expect some World Updates or Marketplace content to require another download.
Reset only the local saved-data copy. Under the game's Saved data screen, select your profile and choose Delete from console. Start the simulator while online and allow Xbox cloud synchronisation to restore the save.
Do not choose Delete everywhere unless you deliberately intend to erase the cloud copy as well. The mistake we see constantly is using the broader deletion option when only the local cache needed refreshing.
Reinstall the base simulator last. Reinstallation is justified when the game remains stuck after a full quit, updates, storage checks and cache clearing. Uninstall it, restart the console, install the base title and launch it before restoring optional aircraft, scenery and World Updates.
Adding every package back before the first test can immediately restore the content that caused the freeze.
How long should an Xbox loading screen take?
A first launch after a large simulator update can be slow, but repeated fresh launches stopping at exactly the same point indicate a fault rather than ordinary loading.
There is no reliable fixed waiting time because package size, connection speed and storage activity vary. Keep waiting while the progress bar moves, the loading messages change or an update is visibly downloading. If the screen remains unchanged after a complete quit and relaunch, work through the fixes above; our slow-start checks help distinguish package scanning from a genuine freeze.
Will clearing Reserved space delete purchased aircraft?
Clearing Reserved space does not remove ownership of Marketplace purchases, but it can remove their downloaded package data from the console.
You can download owned content again after the simulator starts. Reserved space is separate from the profile's cloud save, which is why we recommend clearing it before considering the more disruptive saved-data or reinstall options.
What if I use Xbox Cloud Gaming?
For Xbox Cloud Gaming, local storage, Reserved space and reinstallation steps do not apply because the simulator runs on a remote Xbox host.
End the cloud session completely, quit the Xbox application or browser session, restart the device, test the network and authenticate the Xbox profile again. If installed games work but the cloud edition repeatedly freezes, the likely cause is the cloud session, service availability or account entitlement rather than local simulator files.
