Fix pixelated aircraft textures in MSFS 2020 by checking render scale, texture quality, filtering, VRAM, DLSS and faulty liveries.
Pixelated aircraft textures in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 usually come from low Texture Resolution or Render Scaling, weak anisotropic filtering, DLSS softness, VRAM pressure, or a low-resolution or corrupt livery. Set native output resolution, restore Render Scaling to 100, raise texture quality and filtering, then test the default livery after restarting the sim.
What causes pixelated aircraft textures in MSFS 2020?
The pattern of the problem usually identifies its cause more reliably than changing every graphics option at once.
| What you see | Likely cause | Best diagnostic test |
|---|---|---|
| Every aircraft, cockpit label and edge looks coarse | Low output resolution, Render Scaling or aggressive upscaling | Use native display resolution, Render Scaling 100 and TAA |
| Wings and fuselage markings become muddy at an angle | Low anisotropic filtering or poor mipmaps | Set Anisotropic Filtering to 16x |
| Textures start sharp but turn soft at a large airport | VRAM pressure and lower-resolution mip levels | Reduce other VRAM-heavy settings and repeat the flight |
| Only one aircraft or livery is affected | Low-resolution, outdated or damaged add-on textures | Load the same aircraft with its default livery |
| Surfaces are pink, magenta or blank | Missing texture files or package dependencies | Remove or reinstall the affected package |
How do I fix pixelated aircraft textures?
Start with a controlled graphics baseline, then test the aircraft before increasing settings further.
- Use the display's native resolution. On PC, open
Options > General Options > Graphicsand confirm the output resolution matches the monitor. Set Render Scaling to 100 for the test; values below 100 render the 3D scene at a lower internal resolution. - Test with TAA. DLSS and similar temporal upscalers render below native resolution and reconstruct the image. Performance-oriented modes can soften decals, rivets and cockpit lettering. TAA at 100 render scale is a useful diagnostic even if you later return to DLSS Quality for performance.
- Raise Texture Resolution carefully. Use High as a sensible starting point and try Ultra only when the graphics card has enough VRAM. Apply any restart requested by the simulator. Ultra can make matters worse if it pushes memory use beyond the available budget.
- Set Anisotropic Filtering to 16x. This keeps texture detail sharper across wings, instrument panels and fuselage surfaces viewed at shallow angles. It will not create detail missing from the original livery file.
- Check for VRAM pressure. If textures deteriorate only at detailed airports or after changing aircraft, lower Terrain LOD, Objects LOD, clouds or output resolution before reducing aircraft texture quality. Our practical graphics settings balance for MSFS explains which options consume image quality, GPU time and memory.
- Test without add-ons. Select a stock aircraft and its factory livery. If that looks correct, temporarily remove Community-folder liveries and reintroduce them individually. Duplicate, outdated and incorrectly packaged liveries are common causes.
- Reset graphics-driver overrides. A driver profile forced to performance texture filtering can select softer mip levels. Return the Microsoft Flight Simulator profile to application-controlled defaults, restart the sim and test again.
Change one item at a time and use the same aircraft, livery, airport, camera position and time of day. Otherwise lighting and viewing distance can make a settings change appear more effective than it was.
Why is only one aircraft or livery pixelated?
If every other aircraft is sharp, the affected livery probably has limited source resolution, unsuitable compression, poor mipmaps or a damaged package.
No graphics setting can restore detail that is absent from the original texture. Close-up pixelation can also be normal when a finite texture is stretched across a large fuselage; judge it from a realistic external-camera distance rather than with the camera pressed against the skin.
Mipmaps are progressively smaller copies used as the aircraft moves away. Missing or badly generated mipmaps can cause softness, blockiness or shimmering, while filtering controls which level is displayed. Our explanation of anti-aliasing, filtering and mip selection covers these artefacts in more detail.
For an add-on, reinstall the affected aircraft or livery from its original package. For official content, remove and redownload only the affected package through Content Manager before repairing the entire simulator installation.
Why are cockpit labels or glass displays pixelated?
Printed cockpit labels use aircraft textures, but glass displays are rendered instruments and may look coarse because of the overall render resolution, anti-aliasing or VR headset resolution.
The Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate setting changes how often instruments update; it does not increase their pixel density. In VR, test at a sensible per-eye headset resolution and Render Scaling 100 before blaming the aircraft texture files.
Should I delete the rolling cache?
Usually not: MSFS 2020 aircraft and livery textures come from installed packages, while the rolling cache primarily stores streamed world data.
Clear or rebuild that cache only when terrain, aerial imagery or buildings are also blurry or corrupted. If the whole world is affected, use our separate steps for diagnosing blurry scenery, online data and rolling-cache problems.
What if the aircraft is pink instead of pixelated?
Pink or magenta surfaces indicate missing or unreadable texture assets, not an ordinary resolution problem.
Check that the livery has all required base-aircraft dependencies, remove conflicting copies and reinstall the package. The corrective steps differ from ordinary graphics tuning, so follow our missing and pink texture troubleshooting process.
How do I fix pixelated textures on Xbox Series X or S?
Xbox does not expose the full PC graphics menu, so isolate the aircraft package rather than searching for unavailable texture sliders.
- Fully quit Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and restart the console.
- Test a default aircraft with its factory livery.
- Check Content Manager for updates to the affected aircraft and its dependencies.
- Remove and reinstall only the faulty aircraft or livery if the problem is package-specific.
- If every aircraft looks coarse, confirm the console is outputting the television's native resolution and compare another display or capture before reinstalling simulator content.
