How do I reverse an axis in FS2004?
Reverse only the individual assignment producing the wrong aircraft response. The direction shown by a Windows calibration indicator matters less than what the aircraft actually does.
- Load a default aircraft: Use a simple default aeroplane while diagnosing the controls, rather than an add-on that may have its own control logic.
- Open the assignments: Go to Options > Controls > Assignments and select the joystick-axis section.
- Select the correct device: If FS2004 lists several controllers, inspect each one through the joystick-type selector.
- Find the affected axis: Locate the aileron, elevator, rudder, throttle or brake assignment that moves incorrectly.
- Enable Reverse: Tick or enable the Reverse option for that assignment, then test it through its full travel.
Pulling the stick back should raise the elevator and pitch the nose up; moving the stick left should command a left roll; pressing the right rudder pedal should move the nose right; and advancing the throttle should increase power. Toe-brake axes often require reversal, so a brake remaining applied when the pedals are released does not automatically indicate faulty hardware.
How do I remove conflicting axis assignments?
An FS2004 axis conflict occurs when two physical or virtual inputs control the same function, or when FS2004 and FSUIPC both process one physical axis.
- Inspect every controller: Check the assignments for the joystick, pedals, throttle quadrant, gamepad and any virtual controller. FS2004 can create default mappings when it detects a device.
- Choose one control for each function: Keep the stick or yoke for aileron and elevator, the pedals or twist grip for rudder, and the intended lever for throttle.
- Delete the duplicates: Select each unwanted mapping and use the assignment screen's delete function. Unplugging a device is not a permanent fix because its mapping may return when it is reconnected.
- Check button commands: Remove any switch or rotary assignment repeatedly sending throttle, trim, rudder or centring commands while an analogue axis controls the same function.
- Test one device at a time: Reconnect additional controllers individually and retest after each one.

Normal-flight and slew controls use separate assignments. If the problem appears only in slew mode, edit the slew controls rather than changing an axis that works correctly during flight.

Should I manage FS2004 axes through FSUIPC?
Use either native FS2004 assignments or FSUIPC for a given axis, not both. Native assignments are usually simpler, while FSUIPC is useful when you need its calibration, filtering or aircraft-specific control facilities.
If FSUIPC owns an axis, remove that physical axis from the FS2004 assignments and configure its direction and endpoints through the FSUIPC axis-calibration procedure. Merely having FSUIPC installed does not create a conflict; the problem begins when the same input is actively assigned through both systems.
What if the FS2004 axis still jumps or behaves erratically?
An axis that remains unstable after duplicate mappings are removed should be tested outside FS2004 to separate a hardware fault from a simulator configuration problem.
- Test it in Windows: Open the Windows game-controller panel by running
joy.cpl. Move the control slowly through its full range and look for spikes, dead travel or failure to reach an endpoint. If the fault stops, reconnect them individually and clear their unwanted assignments.
- Adjust sensitivity carefully: Use enough sensitivity to reach full control travel and only enough null zone to stop movement around the centre. A null zone cannot repair electrical noise across the whole axis.
- Try a default aircraft: If default aircraft respond correctly, restore or reconfigure the affected add-on rather than changing the global controls.
- Reset the control configuration last: Close FS2004, back up
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\FS9\FS9.cfg, and rename the original file. FS2004 will create a fresh configuration when restarted, resetting many preferences as well as controller mappings. Reassign one controller at a time; restore the backup if regeneration makes no difference.
