How can I fly the Boeing 707 in MSFS 2024?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Learn how to fly the Boeing 707 in MSFS 2024: choose a compatible add-on, install it correctly, avoid FSX files and operate its classic cockpit.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 does not include a Boeing 707 by default. To fly one, install a third-party 707 package explicitly marked for MSFS 2024, or a confirmed-compatible MSFS 2020 release. Do not copy an FSX 707 into the Community folder: legacy aircraft are not directly compatible.

Which Boeing 707 package works in MSFS 2024?

Choose a complete aircraft package whose documentation specifically names MSFS 2024. A claim that an aircraft works in “Microsoft Flight Simulator” may refer only to MSFS 2020, so look for an explicit compatibility statement rather than relying on the product name.

Package labelExpected result in MSFS 2024Recommendation
Native MSFS 2024 aircraftDesigned for the simulatorBest choice
MSFS 2020 aircraft confirmed for MSFS 2024Should work, although individual systems may have limitationsAcceptable when compatibility is documented
FSX or Prepar3D aircraftWill not work by being copied into the Community folderUse only in its named simulator
707 livery or repaintChanges the appearance of a required base aircraftNot a flyable aircraft by itself

For the easiest experience, select a package with a working virtual cockpit, documentation and an assisted engine-start option. Choose a period-style package if you specifically want manual radios, older autopilot logic and inertial navigation rather than a modern flight-management system.

How do I install a Boeing 707 on PC or console?

On PC, a manually downloaded 707 must be extracted and placed in the active Community folder; console users cannot sideload PC packages. Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 users need a 707 distributed for their platform through the simulator’s supported content system.

  1. Confirm the simulator version: Check that the package supports MSFS 2024, not merely FSX, Prepar3D or MSFS 2020.
  2. Check that it is a complete aircraft: A livery normally requires a separate base 707 and will not create an aircraft entry on its own.
  3. Install the package: Use its supplied installer or extract the package to the correct Community folder. Our detailed PC aircraft installation instructions explain how to find the active folder and recognise a valid package.
  4. Restart the simulator: Open the aircraft selector, remove restrictive filters and search for Boeing, 707 or the variant designation used by the add-on.
  5. Read the supplied manual: Controls, engine-start procedures and navigation equipment differ substantially between 707 packages.

For a manually installed package, manifest.json and layout.json should normally sit at the package’s top level. If they are buried inside an extra folder created during extraction, MSFS 2024 may not detect the aircraft.

Why does my Boeing 707 not appear in MSFS 2024?

Most missing 707s are caused by an incompatible package, an unextracted archive or incorrect folder nesting. Check these points before reinstalling the simulator:

  • The download is a complete MSFS aircraft rather than an FSX model or repaint.
  • The archive has been extracted; placing the ZIP file in Community is not enough.
  • The aircraft package is in the Community folder actually used by MSFS 2024.
  • The package does not sit one or two folders deeper than its manifest and layout files.
  • Any required base aircraft or library dependency is installed.
  • The aircraft selector is not hiding it through manufacturer, category or availability filters.
  • An in-sim package has been downloaded locally rather than only added to the account library.

Our MSFS 2024 aircraft-not-showing checklist covers the folder, dependency and filtering problems in more detail.

Can I use an FSX Boeing 707 in MSFS 2024?

No—an FSX Boeing 707 is not an MSFS 2024 add-on, even if its folder contains familiar aircraft configuration and panel files. For example, our FSX-labelled SAA 707-420 package belongs in Flight Simulator X and should not be copied into MSFS 2024.

Legacy models, gauges, cockpit code, sounds and flight dynamics require substantial redevelopment for the newer simulator. Renaming folders or editing a configuration file does not perform that conversion; a proper port also requires the original developer’s source material and permission.

How do I fly the 707 after installing it?

Begin with the engines running on a runway until you understand the particular add-on’s throttle, trim, flap and autopilot behaviour. The Boeing 707 predates modern glass-cockpit workflows, and there is no single cockpit procedure shared by every simulated variant.

  1. Verify the controls: Check that all four engines respond correctly and test the brakes, rudder, elevators, ailerons, flaps, spoilers and landing gear before departure.
  2. Set fuel and balance: Keep the centre of gravity within the limits provided by the add-on. An incorrect loading can produce weak rotation authority or severe pitch sensitivity.
  3. Calculate the departure: Use the package’s performance documentation for flap setting, trim and V-speeds. Values from a 737, 747 or a different 707 engine variant are not substitutes.
  4. Take off smoothly: Apply thrust progressively, maintain the centreline with rudder, rotate at the calculated speed and retract the gear after establishing a positive climb. Retract flaps according to the documented speed schedule.
  5. Use the fitted navigation system: The aircraft may provide VOR/DME, ILS, period inertial navigation or an optional GPS. Do not assume a modern route will automatically load into the cockpit or that LNAV, VNAV and autothrottle are available.
  6. Plan the approach early: Reduce speed in stages, observe the add-on’s flap and gear limits, and use its calculated landing speed. For an instrument arrival, our step-by-step MSFS 2024 ILS setup explains interception and glideslope capture; use the 707 manual for the aircraft-specific radio and autopilot switches.

A common mistake is treating the 707 like a modern airliner with older graphics. Expect more manual power management, earlier descent planning and less automation. If the package includes a simplified GPS or assisted startup, use those options first and move to period procedures once the basic aircraft handling is settled.
