Which performance mod should you choose?

Choose according to the actual bottleneck shown by the simulator’s FPS display, not the largest FPS claim in a download description.

If the simulator says it is limited by the main thread

AutoFPS can help a CPU-limited flight when terrain detail and dense scenery are responsible. It will do much less if the real load comes from a highly complex aircraft, glass-cockpit displays, road vehicles or AI traffic; those elements need to be reduced or replaced directly.

If the GPU or VRAM is the limit

Lower render resolution, Render Scaling, cloud quality or texture demand before installing another utility. A lighter texture variant can help a specific VRAM-heavy aircraft or airport, but AutoFPS cannot fix every graphics bottleneck because terrain detail is often governed by the main thread.

If FPS is adequate but motion still looks uneven

If performance deteriorated after installing add-ons

It lets you build a minimal package set for each flight and test scenery, aircraft, traffic and utilities separately. How should you test an FPS mod?

Test one change at a time under repeatable conditions, because weather, traffic, aircraft systems and location can move the result more than the utility itself.

  1. Record a baseline. Use the same aircraft, airport, runway view, weather and traffic settings. Note both average FPS and visible stutters.
  2. Disable third-party content. Start with an empty or deactivated Community-folder set, then confirm that the simulator itself performs normally.
  3. Set an achievable target. For AutoFPS, choose a frame rate the computer can approach in the demanding part of the flight. An unrealistic target merely forces detail down and may make settings oscillate.
  4. Enable one utility. Do not run two dynamic LOD tools or combine several frame-generation injectors; they can fight over settings or interfere with presentation.
  5. Add packages in batches. If performance drops, divide the last batch and retest until the responsible aircraft, airport, traffic tool or scenery package is identified.
  6. Repeat after simulator updates. Remove injectors and external utilities first when troubleshooting a new crash, visual artefact or unexplained performance change.

External utilities such as AutoFPS normally run outside the simulator; placing their program files in the Community folder is a common installation mistake. Follow the utility’s own instructions, and never assume an MSFS 2020 injector or configuration replacement is compatible with MSFS 2024.

Which alleged FPS mods should you avoid?

Avoid packages promising large gains with no quality reduction, no hardware requirement and no explanation of what they change.

  • Generic “FPS booster” configuration files: these often overwrite personal settings, contain stale values or simply reduce quality under unfamiliar labels.
  • Frame generation used on very low base FPS: the counter may rise while input delay, cockpit ghosting and major stutters remain.
  • Reduced textures for a CPU bottleneck: smaller textures help VRAM pressure, not overloaded aircraft systems or traffic calculations.
  • Multiple automatic tuning utilities: two programs changing Level of Detail at once can produce oscillation, pop-in and inconsistent benchmarks.
  • Old injectors carried between simulator versions: graphics hooks can stop working after updates or cause crashes before the main menu.

Do FPS mods work on Xbox or PlayStation?

External FPS utilities, Community-folder managers and graphics injectors are PC-only. Xbox Series X|S users must rely on the simulator’s console settings and supported add-on system. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 players on PlayStation 5 or PS5 Pro face the same restriction; Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was never released for PlayStation.

For console users, the practical alternatives are reducing traffic or visual options where the simulator exposes them, avoiding unusually demanding add-ons, and restarting after a persistent performance problem. Claims that require copying files, running a companion executable or editing configuration files do not apply to consoles.
