How do MSFS frame generation mods work, and are they worth it?

Frame generation mods for Microsoft Flight Simulator insert interpolated frames between frames rendered by the simulator, making motion look smoother without speeding up the simulation itself. They can be worthwhile on a stable, moderately fast PC render rate, but they cannot cure a MainThread bottleneck and may add latency, ghosting and cockpit-display artefacts.

How do frame generation mods work?

A frame-generation mod analyses consecutive rendered frames and estimates what an intermediate frame should look like. Engine-integrated methods can use motion vectors and depth information, while screen-level interpolation tools usually work only from completed images.

One common replacement method redirects the simulator’s DLSS frame-generation path to an FSR-based generator. This can expose frame generation on GPUs excluded from the native DLSS FG route, but it remains an unsupported translation layer rather than a new capability added to the simulator.

Frame generation is separate from upscaling. DLSS, FSR and similar upscalers reconstruct each real frame from a lower internal resolution; frame generation creates additional temporal images between those frames. They can operate together, but changing both at once makes faults harder to diagnose.

Does frame generation really double MSFS FPS?

It can roughly double the displayed presentation rate, but it does not double Microsoft Flight Simulator’s real work rate. A counter might show output near 60 FPS from a base rate near 30 FPS, minus processing overhead, yet aircraft systems, scenery preparation and control response still run according to the underlying frames.

This distinction explains why generated 60 FPS does not feel identical to native 60 FPS. Input response remains closer to the base rate, and a long CPU or shader-compilation pause cannot be filled convincingly. Are MSFS frame generation mods worth using?

MSFS frame generation mods are worth trying when the simulator already maintains a consistent base frame rate and you mainly want smoother camera movement. There is no universal threshold, but around 30 rendered FPS is a practical lower limit; 40 FPS or more usually gives the interpolator less movement to guess between frames.

If your hardware supports the simulator’s own implementation, follow the built-in frame generation setup before installing a replacement. Native integration usually provides better motion data, latency management and update compatibility.

  • Use one when: the base frame rate is stable, camera panning is the main problem, your monitor can display the additional frames, and minor interpolation errors do not affect your flying.
  • Skip one when: the base rate frequently falls below roughly 25–30 FPS, pauses are caused by the MainThread, or instrument readability and minimum latency matter more than visual smoothness.
  • Be cautious with glass cockpits: moving map labels, tapes, digits and mouse pointers can briefly smear or duplicate because they move differently from the outside view.
  • Expect aircraft-specific results: propellers, rotor blades, wing edges, rain effects and fast head movement expose interpolation errors more readily than steady airliner cruise.

Will frame generation fix MainThread stutters?

No, frame generation cannot remove MainThread stalls, scenery-loading pauses or an unstable base frame time. It can make regular gaps between rendered frames look smoother, but it has no valid information with which to reconstruct a sudden half-second freeze.

If the simulator reports a MainThread limitation, reduce CPU-heavy settings such as traffic, airport activity and terrain detail before judging the mod. How should you test a frame generation mod?

A controlled before-and-after comparison is the only reliable way to decide whether a particular mod helps your PC, aircraft and flying style.

  1. Record a baseline. Use the same aircraft, airport, weather, traffic and camera position. A repeatable Microsoft Flight Simulator benchmark prevents weather or location changes from distorting the result.
  2. Check the real bottleneck. Note the base frame rate, frame-time stability and whether the simulator is limited by the GPU or MainThread.
  3. Enable only one method. Do not stack native frame generation, a replacement DLL and external interpolation. Competing frame-pacing systems commonly produce judder or misleading counters.
  4. Test difficult scenes. Pan across terminal buildings, move the mouse over cockpit displays, watch propellers or rotors, and fly low over dense scenery.
  5. Judge response as well as FPS. Hand-fly an approach and make small control inputs. Keep the mod only if motion is clearly smoother without objectionable latency, flicker or distorted instruments.

Update, compatibility and security problems

Simulator and graphics-driver updates can overwrite a replacement file, change the expected interface or prevent the simulator from launching. Keep a record of every file changed, remove the mod before diagnosing crashes, and restore the original files or use the platform’s installation repair function where necessary.

Injected DLL files are executable code, so their origin and intended simulator build matter. Avoid anonymous repacks, do not mix files from several frame-generation packages, and never assume a mod made for MSFS 2020 will work unchanged in MSFS 2024.

Do frame generation mods work on console or VR?

Third-party frame generation mods are effectively PC-only; Xbox and PlayStation editions do not allow users to replace rendering DLLs or run desktop interpolation tools. Any frame-generation technology built into a console edition is controlled by the simulator and platform rather than installed as a mod.

Conventional desktop frame-generation mods are also poor substitutes for VR reprojection because a headset needs correctly timed, independent views for both eyes. Treat them as flat-screen tools unless the simulator and the specific method explicitly support VR.

The practical verdict

Prefer native frame generation first, a well-matched replacement mod second, and screen-level interpolation only when neither integrated option is available. A mod can make a stable 35–45 FPS presentation look much smoother, but it cannot turn an irregular, MainThread-limited 20 FPS session into responsive native 40 FPS. Test it in the aircraft and scenery you actually use, not over an empty runway.
