Why does the A380X have lower FPS than other aircraft?

The FlyByWire A380X combines complex aircraft systems, numerous cockpit displays and a much larger visual model than a typical default aircraft. That creates a relatively high baseline CPU and GPU load before MSFS adds traffic, detailed airports, weather and ground services.

The hardest case is usually an A380X parked at a large third-party hub with injected traffic and airport activity running. Performance in cruise can be substantially better, so optimise against the busiest airport and cockpit view you actually expect to use.

How do I find the A380X performance bottleneck?

Best settings to improve FlyByWire A380X FPS

The most effective settings depend on the reported bottleneck, so change them in this order rather than applying an indiscriminate Low preset.

  1. Create a repeatable baseline. Load the A380X at the same gate with fixed weather and time. Record cockpit FPS and frame-time behaviour, then change one group of settings at a time.
  2. Update and clean the aircraft installation. Use the FlyByWire Installer's normal update process and avoid keeping an old manually copied A380X package beside the installer-managed version. Duplicate packages more often cause faults than a predictable FPS loss, but they invalidate performance testing.
  3. Reduce traffic first when main-thread limited. Lower AI or live traffic, parked aircraft, road vehicles, airport workers and other ground activity.   4. Lower Terrain LOD in measured steps. Terrain LOD is often more useful than lowering resolution when the main thread is saturated. Object LOD can also help at dense airports, although it affects both visual detail and object workload.
  5. Test Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate. If that option is present in your simulator version, try a lower setting. The benefit varies because custom A380X displays do not necessarily respond identically to default avionics, but it is a worthwhile CPU test.
  6. Reduce GPU load without destroying cockpit clarity. Lower render scaling gradually or use the simulator's available upscaler. Reduce volumetric clouds, reflections, ambient occlusion and shadow quality before making cockpit textures unreadable. If lowering resolution does not improve FPS, stop: the GPU is probably not the primary limit.
  7. Control VRAM use. Test a standard-resolution livery, reduce Texture Resolution or Object LOD, and avoid combining the A380X with several highly detailed airport and city packages. Restart when the simulator requests it after a texture or rendering-mode change.
  8. Close separately rendered views. Instrument pop-outs, extra camera windows, multi-monitor views and VR all add rendering work. Close unused pop-outs before judging A380X cockpit performance.
  9. Run an add-on isolation test. Temporarily remove unrelated packages from Community, leaving the A380X and anything it explicitly requires. Use a stock airport with no injected traffic or ground-service programme. For MSFS 2020, testing DirectX 11 is sensible if DirectX 12 produces VRAM warnings or severe airport stutters on your system. Compare both after a simulator restart under identical conditions. Do not assume one rendering mode is universally faster.

Should I use frame generation or AutoFPS with the A380X?

Frame generation can make A380X motion look smoother, but it does not increase the underlying simulation rate or remove main-thread stalls.

Start with a stable base frame rate and consistent frame times. Generated frames can introduce latency or visual artefacts around glass displays and fast-moving cockpit controls, so judge it from the flight deck rather than an external camera. AutoFPS-style tools can adjust LOD to protect a target frame rate, which is useful when performance changes sharply between cruise and a large hub.

Why does A380X FPS get worse during a long flight?

A gradual decline usually points to accumulated traffic, memory pressure or a background add-on rather than one graphics setting being permanently too high.

  • Close any MCDU, instrument or map pop-outs left running in separate windows.
  • Return simulation rate to normal; accelerated simulation increases the work required per real-time second.
  • Test without traffic injection, ground services, toolbar utilities and destination scenery.
  • Watch for VRAM saturation as the destination airport loads, particularly with high-resolution liveries and textures.
  • Start the same route from a fresh simulator session. If that prevents the decline, isolate add-ons before reducing every graphics setting.

Deleting the rolling cache rarely fixes consistently low A380X FPS; it is mainly relevant to corrupted or problematic streamed scenery. Reinstalling the aircraft is likewise unnecessary unless files are missing, duplicated or producing actual loading errors. If a clean A380X at a stock airport remains main-thread limited, further resolution reductions will not help—the practical choices are lower traffic and LOD, a stable FPS cap, or faster CPU performance.
