Is FlightGear realistic enough for airline flying?
FlightGear can support realistic airline procedures, but the aircraft package determines how much of the flight deck actually works. A detailed exterior model does not guarantee a functional flight management system, electrical network, pressurisation system or accurate LNAV and VNAV behaviour.
A mistake we see constantly is choosing an aircraft by screenshots alone. Look for clear system documentation, compatibility with your installed FlightGear release and evidence that the autopilot, navigation radios and flight-management functions are implemented. For training, begin with conventional ILS approaches and basic autopilot modes before relying on advanced route automation.
FlightGear is well suited to gate-to-gate practice, navigation, circuits and instrument approaches. It does not reproduce every part of commercial airline operations: dispatch, cabin management, complex failures and professional ATC may be limited or dependent on the aircraft and configuration.
Are Microsoft Flight Simulator and X-Plane free?

How do I set up FlightGear for airline flying?
- Install the Windows build: obtain the Windows-compatible FlightGear package and use the 64-bit build on a normal 64-bit Windows 11 installation.
- Choose a compatible airliner: use an aircraft intended for your installed FlightGear release. Packages made for a different development branch may load with missing instruments, broken sounds or non-functional systems.
- Configure the controls: calibrate pitch, roll, yaw and throttle axes inside the simulator. A basic joystick is enough; a yoke, pedals and throttle quadrant are optional.
- Start with a short route: practise take-off, heading and altitude modes, an ILS intercept and landing before attempting a long automated sector.
- Tune performance: if frame rate is poor, reduce cloud detail, shadows, scenery complexity and AI traffic before lowering cockpit resolution. Stable frame pacing matters more than maximum visual detail when operating an airliner.
What causes problems on Windows 11?
Most failures come from graphics drivers, incompatible aircraft packages or controller power management rather than Windows 11 itself. Install the proper graphics driver for the GPU instead of relying solely on the basic Windows display driver, and make sure a laptop is using its dedicated GPU for the simulator where one is fitted.
