Compare free DCS World helicopter mods UH-60L and OH-6A, with dependencies, installation steps, multiplayer caveats and fixes.
The two standout free helicopter mods for DCS World are the UH-60L Black Hawk and OH-6A Cayuse. Both are standalone community aircraft, so they do not require a paid helicopter module. The UH-60L suits utility transport; the lighter OH-6A is better for observation, low-level flying and basic armed missions.
Which free DCS helicopter mods are worth installing?
The practical shortlist consists of the UH-60L and OH-6A, both of which provide proper flyable helicopters rather than merely adding liveries or AI models. Our overview of notable free DCS community mods places them alongside the strongest fixed-wing projects.
| Helicopter | Best suited to | Paid dependency | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| UH-60L Black Hawk | Utility flying, transport, formation work and larger missions | None | Community systems and features can change between releases |
| OH-6A Cayuse | Scout flying, confined areas, low-level work and light attack | None | Its low mass and responsive controls make it less forgiving |
UH-60L Black Hawk
The UH-60L is the better general-purpose choice when you want a medium utility helicopter with an interactive cockpit and a more stable platform than the little OH-6A. It works particularly well for transport-style missions, but it remains an unofficial community module rather than a complete reproduction backed by Eagle Dynamics.
OH-6A Cayuse
The OH-6A, commonly called the Loach, is a compact observation helicopter built for flying close to the terrain. It is standalone, has its own cockpit and does not need the paid UH-1H, Mi-8 or another helicopter module; our OH-6A installation and dependency guide covers this aircraft in detail.
Older helicopter conversions and derivative projects also circulate, including cockpit swaps and modifications based on another community aircraft. We do not count those as dependable standalone choices because their availability, required modules and compatibility vary. A livery is not a helicopter mod either: it still requires ownership of the aircraft it repaints.
Are any official DCS World helicopters permanently free?
DCS World does not include a permanently free official flyable helicopter in its base installation. Its built-in free aircraft are fixed-wing, while official helicopters such as the UH-1H, Mi-8MTV2, Ka-50, Mi-24P, AH-64D, OH-58D and CH-47F are paid modules.
Helicopters visible as AI units in the Mission Editor are not automatically player-flyable. Temporary trials should also not be confused with freeware: access can expire, whereas the UH-60L and OH-6A community mods do not require purchasing another aircraft.
How do I install a free helicopter mod in DCS World?
Install community helicopters inside the active DCS folder under Windows Saved Games, not in the simulator's protected installation directory.
- Close DCS World before copying or replacing any mod files.
- Extract the downloaded archive rather than placing the compressed file directly into DCS.
- Open the active Saved Games profile. Most installations use
Saved Games\DCS; an installation with an older profile may still useSaved Games\DCS.openbeta. - Create the aircraft directory if necessary, then place the extracted module at
Saved Games\DCS\Mods\aircraft\ModName. - Check the folder depth. The module's
entry.luashould be inside its main folder, not buried beneath a second identically named directory. - Launch DCS and verify the aircraft in the Controls aircraft list or Mission Editor. Some mods do not provide Instant Action missions for every map.
For the broader folder structure and safe removal process, see our complete guide to installing DCS mods.
Why does a DCS helicopter mod not appear or work?
A missing community helicopter is usually caused by the wrong Saved Games profile, an extra nested folder or an obsolete installation left behind after an update.
- Wrong folder: Confirm that the mod is under
Mods\aircraftin the Saved Games profile DCS is actually using. - Double folder: Archives often extract as
ModName\ModName\entry.lua. Move the inner module folder up one level. - Mixed versions: Delete the old mod folder before installing a replacement. Overwriting it can leave obsolete scripts and files in place.
- DCS update incompatibility: Community aircraft can stop loading after simulator changes. Use a release explicitly stated to support your DCS build rather than modifying core files as a workaround.
- Security quarantine: Some aircraft use compiled components. If security software removes one, verify that the archive came from the project's recognised release source; do not disable system protection indiscriminately.
- Multiplayer mismatch: The server's mission must include and permit the mod, and the relevant server and clients should use the same release. Passing an integrity check alone does not make a modded slot available.
- Unassigned controls: Select the mod's own aircraft category in DCS Controls and bind pitch, roll, pedals and collective there. Bindings from an official helicopter do not necessarily transfer.
Which free helicopter mod is best for beginners?
The UH-60L is generally the easier starting point because its larger airframe feels less nervous, while the OH-6A rewards finer control inputs and quicker pedal corrections. The simpler-looking OH-6A is not automatically easier to hover.
Whichever one you choose, remove control conflicts, bind a proper collective axis and begin with light fuel, calm weather and no weapons. Our beginner's DCS helicopter flying guidance explains control setup, hover practice, translational lift and the mistakes that commonly cause take-off rollovers.
