These modest figures make more sense alongside FS2004's release date and original hardware context. Any newer operating system also needs enough memory, storage and processing power for the operating system itself; FS2004's figures do not replace those requirements.
Are the original FS2004 requirements enough?
No—the official minimum can start the unmodified simulator, but it does not promise smooth performance at a detailed airport, in poor weather or with substantial AI traffic. Add-on aircraft, replacement textures and scenery can raise CPU, memory and storage demands sharply.
On a modern PC, raw hardware speed is rarely the obstacle. Operating-system compatibility, graphics drivers and the retail disc check usually matter more. Leave additional disk space beyond the base 1.8 GB as well: a developed FS2004 installation can become many times larger than the original simulator.
Will FS2004 run on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
FS2004 can run on many Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers, but neither system was officially supported and successful installation is not guaranteed. A powerful new PC can exceed every listed requirement and still encounter software compatibility problems.
- The simulator installs but will not start: some retail releases use legacy disc authentication that modern Windows may block. Compatibility mode does not necessarily solve this because the problem can sit below the simulator itself.
- Add-ons cannot save or modify files: installing under the protected
Program Filesfolders can trigger permission or file-redirection problems. A simple folder such asC:\FS2004is generally easier to manage. - Menus or full-screen graphics misbehave: test the simulator in windowed mode and avoid forcing multiple anti-aliasing or compatibility options at once.
- Heavy add-ons cause memory errors: FS2004 remains a 32-bit application with a limited address space. Installing more physical RAM does not remove that architectural ceiling.
