No. FSX and FSX: Steam Edition do not provide realistic visual crash effects such as deforming airframes, debris fields or stock explosion sequences. With crash detection enabled, a hard impact normally stops the flight and reports a crash. Some aircraft add-ons can trigger smoke, fire or damage animations, but those are developer-made features.
What does FSX do when an aircraft crashes?
FSX recognises a crash through aircraft contact points and collision geometry, then halts or resets the flight rather than playing a destruction sequence. The precise notification depends on the flight or session, but seeing no explosion is normal.
Collision detection is not always a perfect match for what appears on screen. Incorrect aircraft contact points can register an impact too early, while scenery objects without collision geometry may let the aircraft pass through them.
Which crash setting should I use?
The appropriate realism setting depends on whether you want FSX to terminate the flight or let you continue after a hard contact.

These choices are found among FSX's realism options. Disabling crash detection does not add damage effects; it only prevents the simulator from ending the flight when a collision is detected.
Can add-on aircraft show smoke, fire or visible damage?
An FSX add-on can show crash-related visuals if its developer built them into the model or supplied custom effect and gauge logic. Possible features include damaged geometry, detachable-looking components, engine smoke, fire or an emergency animation.
FSX's effect system can render smoke and fire, but it does not automatically associate every .fx file with a collision. A livery by itself cannot add a damage model unless it also includes the required model, effects or scripts.
Why are an add-on's custom crash effects missing?
Missing custom effects usually indicate an installation or trigger problem rather than a fault with FSX's stock crash system.
- Confirm that the feature exists. Check the aircraft documentation for explicit mention of visual damage, smoke or fire. Do not assume every military or highly detailed aircraft includes it.
- Check the installation location. The supplied effect files must reach the active FSX installation's
Effectsfolder, with any supporting textures preserved. This is a common problem when boxed FSX and Steam Edition are both installed. - Use the intended trigger. Some effects respond to an engine failure, switch, gauge command or scripted damage threshold rather than to every ground impact.

Can FSX be made to show realistic aircraft damage?
FSX cannot provide universal deformation, structural breakup or persistent debris physics for every aircraft. An add-on can imitate parts of the aftermath with custom geometry, animations and particle effects, but it remains limited to the features built for that particular aircraft.
For a stock FSX aircraft, a crash notification followed by a stopped or reset flight—with no fireball or visibly crushed airframe—is the expected behaviour.
