GeoFS is free to use online in a browser. See what the free tier includes, what the optional HD plan adds and how to fix common loading issues.
Yes. GeoFS is free to use online through a compatible web browser, with no simulator download required. The free tier provides the core flight simulator, worldwide scenery and shared multiplayer flying. A paid HD subscription is optional; it improves the scenery experience and removes some free-tier limitations rather than unlocking basic flight.
What is included with free GeoFS?
The free version includes everything needed to select an aircraft, take off and fly around the world. It uses standard-resolution satellite scenery and is supported by advertising.
- Browser-based flying without a conventional installation
- Worldwide terrain and standard satellite imagery
- A selection of aircraft and viewpoints
- Keyboard, mouse, touch and supported controller input
- GeoFS's shared multiplayer environment
Multiplayer access does not automatically provide structured controller-led ATC. Our overview of multiplayer flight simulators and their different levels of realism explains that distinction.
What does a GeoFS HD subscription add?
GeoFS HD mainly pays for higher-definition satellite imagery and an advertising-free presentation. The core ability to fly remains available without subscribing.
| Feature | Free GeoFS | GeoFS HD |
|---|---|---|
| Core flight simulator | Included | Included |
| Worldwide scenery | Standard imagery | Higher-definition imagery |
| Advertising | Displayed | Removed |
| Internet connection | Required | Required |
HD is most useful for low-level VFR flying, where roads, coastlines and local landmarks matter. Subscription prices and payment periods can change, so check the offer displayed inside GeoFS rather than relying on an old quoted price.
Does GeoFS require a download or account?
The GeoFS browser version requires no conventional simulator installation, but it still downloads code and streams scenery while running. It should not be treated as an offline simulator simply because it has loaded once.
You do not need to purchase HD before launching the free browser mode. If GeoFS requests a sign-in, that is separate from payment and does not by itself enrol you in the paid tier.
Mobile applications can have different platform terms from the browser version. For phone and tablet alternatives, see our guide to free flight simulators for Android and iOS.
Why is free GeoFS not loading?
Most GeoFS loading failures come from disabled hardware acceleration, blocked scripts or interrupted scenery streaming rather than a requirement to pay.
- Update the browser: use a modern browser with WebGL and hardware acceleration enabled.
- Check content blockers: temporarily test without an ad blocker or strict script-blocking extension, because the free tier is advertising-supported.
- Check the connection: school, workplace and public networks may block imagery or multiplayer data even when the main page opens.
- Reduce rendering load: lower the available graphics or resolution settings if scenery appears but the simulator runs poorly.
- Reconnect the controller: let the simulator finish loading before assigning and calibrating a joystick or gamepad.
Is free GeoFS the right choice?
Choose free GeoFS when you want quick browser access, global scenery and casual multiplayer without installing a large simulator. Choose HD when sharper ground imagery is valuable enough to justify a subscription.
If you want offline use, extensive add-ons or more detailed aircraft systems, compare the trade-offs in our practical GeoFS and FlightGear comparison. GeoFS prioritises accessibility; it is not intended to replace every feature of a full desktop simulator.
