The main caveat is that FlightGear's quality depends heavily on the aircraft and scenery package selected. A well-developed aircraft can model navigation, engines and failures in considerable depth; an old or unfinished community model may be much simpler. Which free flight simulator is more realistic?

FlightGear is generally more realistic, particularly for cockpit procedures, radio navigation, configurable weather and aircraft-specific systems. It supports established flight-dynamics engines, but the result is only as accurate as the data and systems work behind each aircraft.

GeoFS concentrates on accessible flying rather than deep systems simulation. Its aircraft are convincing enough for basic handling, circuits, sightseeing and learning the relationship between pitch, power and speed. It is less suitable for practising a complete airliner start-up, detailed failures or a complex IFR workflow.

Both provide multiplayer, but GeoFS makes shared-world traffic easier to reach. That traffic should not be confused with a structured or professionally controlled ATC environment.

Which has better graphics and performance?

GeoFS offers the stronger instant view of the whole world, while FlightGear provides more scope to improve individual airports, aircraft and local scenery. GeoFS streams global imagery as needed, which works well for high-altitude sightseeing. In the free tier, lower-resolution ground imagery and generic airport detail become more apparent near the runway.

FlightGear's default world is less visually uniform. Cockpit quality, terrain, buildings and airports vary by package and region, but users can replace or extend them. GeoFS is easier to test on a modest computer because nothing substantial has to be installed, but browser-based does not automatically mean faster. It still requires working WebGL graphics acceleration, enough memory and a steady connection. FlightGear places more load on local hardware and accumulates scenery on disk, although shadows, clouds, visibility, anti-aliasing and AI traffic can be reduced independently.

A useful diagnosis is to watch the cockpit as well as the ground. If the aircraft remains smooth but terrain stays blurry or loads late in GeoFS, bandwidth is probably the restriction. If the entire view jerks, reduce rendering resolution or graphics quality and check that the browser is using hardware acceleration.

Are FlightGear and GeoFS completely free?

FlightGear is the genuinely unrestricted free option: the simulator is open-source, and its core functionality does not require a subscription. Aircraft and scenery can be obtained separately, although individual community packages may carry their own licences. The FlightGear simulator package and download notes provide a direct starting point.

GeoFS has a functional free tier, but it is a hosted service rather than open-source desktop software. Optional paid access provides higher-definition imagery and removes some free-tier restrictions. The free version remains suitable for casual flying, provided standard-resolution scenery is acceptable.

Can FlightGear or GeoFS run offline?

FlightGear can fly offline after the required aircraft and scenery have been stored locally; GeoFS is designed around an internet connection. FlightGear's live weather, multiplayer and automatic scenery downloads will not update offline, so download the intended flying area before disconnecting.

GeoFS gains its convenience by loading the simulator and world data through the browser. It is one of the clearest examples of the no-install browser flight simulator approach, but that also makes it a poor choice for unreliable connections or offline travel.

Both can be flown without specialist hardware. FlightGear offers deeper axis, button and sensitivity configuration for joysticks, yokes, throttles and rudder pedals. GeoFS controller support depends partly on whether the browser and operating system expose the device correctly; keyboard and mouse controls are usually the quickest fallback.

Common problems and practical fixes

  • FlightGear shows ocean or missing terrain: the required scenery has not finished downloading, automatic scenery retrieval is disabled, or its cache is not writable. Check the scenery path and TerraSync cache, then load the area online before attempting an offline flight.
  • FlightGear controls move by themselves: two devices are often assigned to the same axis, or an axis is reversed. Calibrate the hardware, remove duplicate bindings and verify throttle, rudder and toe-brake axes separately.
  • GeoFS opens to a black or incomplete view: confirm that browser hardware acceleration and WebGL are available. Graphics-driver problems, restrictive privacy settings and content blockers can prevent terrain or cockpit assets from loading.
  • GeoFS scenery remains blurry: allow time for imagery to stream and check the connection before increasing graphics settings. Higher rendering quality cannot restore detail absent from the free imagery tier.

The better choice by type of simmer

  • Choose FlightGear for realistic procedures, extensive control hardware, offline use, community aircraft and a simulator you can keep modifying.
  • Choose GeoFS for immediate browser access, occasional worldwide sightseeing, straightforward multiplayer and minimal setup.
  • Choose GeoFS first on uncertain hardware because it can be tested without a large installation. If WebGL or network performance is poor, FlightGear with reduced settings may actually run more consistently.
  • Choose FlightGear for long-term learning, but select aircraft carefully. A polished Cessna or airliner model is more useful than a large hangar of incomplete aircraft.

For most enthusiasts asking which is the better simulator rather than merely the quickest to open, FlightGear wins. GeoFS remains the better access-first option: it removes the installation, storage and scenery-management work that often discourages a casual first flight.
