How do I install wing-view camera files in FS2004?

To install wing-view camera files in FS2004, extract the download to a temporary folder, back up the aircraft’s active panel folder and aircraft.cfg, then copy or merge the supplied files exactly as the readme specifies. Most FS2004 wing views modify panel.cfg; they are aircraft-specific and should not overwrite unrelated panel or aircraft configuration.

Where do FS2004 wing-view files go?

FS2004 wing-view files normally go into the aircraft’s active panel folder, not a global camera folder. The usual location is <FS2004>\Aircraft\<aircraft>\panel\, although the aircraft may use a folder such as panel.wide instead.

Open the aircraft’s aircraft.cfg and inspect the panel= line in the relevant [fltsim.x] entry. A blank value uses panel; a value such as wide uses panel.wide. If the selected panel contains an alias= entry, it borrows another aircraft’s panel. Editing that shared panel could affect several aircraft.

FS2004 does not use the FSX-style per-aircraft [CameraDefinition.x] system. A download containing only those sections is not a native FS2004 wing-view package and will be ignored.

How do I install the files without losing my panel?

  1. Close FS2004. Configuration files may not reload cleanly while the aircraft is open.
  2. Extract the archive elsewhere first. Do not unzip directly into the FS2004 directory. Read the supplied instructions and confirm that the files were made for the exact aircraft model and panel version.
  3. Find the active panel folder. Use the aircraft’s panel= entry rather than assuming that the plain panel folder is active.
  4. Make a complete backup. Copy the active panel folder and aircraft.cfg to a safe location. A mistake we see constantly is replacing a customised panel.cfg with a complete file intended for a different release of the aircraft.
  5. Copy the supplied assets. Panel bitmaps normally remain in the panel folder. Put gauge or module files into global FS2004 folders only when the package instructions explicitly require it, preserving any subfolder structure.
  6. Merge configuration entries where required. If the archive supplies text rather than a complete configuration, add its entry to [Window Titles], its matching [WindowXX] section and any accompanying [Views] settings. Use an unused WindowXX number and change the title entry and section heading together. Do not casually alter the supplied ident= value because another section may refer to it.
  7. Merge aircraft changes selectively. Some packages alter the eyepoint= line under [Views] in aircraft.cfg. Copy only the requested setting; replacing the entire file can remove liveries, contact points or flight-dynamics changes.
  8. Restart and test the aircraft. Open the FS2004 Views menu and look for the named view, often under the instrument-panel entries. A Shift-number shortcut may also be assigned, but its number depends on the panel window order.

When editing a CFG file, use a plain-text editor and make sure it remains a .cfg file rather than being saved as .cfg.txt.

Why does the wing view not appear?

A missing wing view usually means FS2004 is loading a different panel folder or the new window was not registered correctly.

  • No entry in the Views menu: check that the new WindowXX= line exists under [Window Titles] and has a corresponding section with the same number.
  • The old panel still loads: recheck the selected livery’s panel= value and look for a panel alias.
  • The view is black or incomplete: verify that every referenced bitmap and gauge was copied to the location specified by the package. An incompatible or missing gauge can leave a panel window blank.
  • The main cockpit disappeared: restore the backup. The replacement panel.cfg probably omitted windows or gauges from your existing panel, so merge the wing-view sections instead.
  • The view points through the fuselage: confirm that the package matches the exact visual model. Wing position and cabin geometry differ between aircraft variants, and zoom alone cannot correct a badly placed viewpoint.
  • FS2004 crashes while loading the aircraft: restore the original files, then add the modification in stages. Common causes are malformed CFG sections, duplicate entries and required gauges or modules that were not installed.

Should I use a camera utility instead?

A camera utility is the better choice when you want adjustable views or aircraft-specific presets rather than fixed panel windows.
