Compare four KDFW airport scenery add-ons for FSX, from a detailed Terminal D package to lightweight ADE and AFCAD updates, plus conflict advice.
For FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, our library offers four practical KDFW options: a fuller Dallas/Fort Worth package with Terminal D and jetways, a lightweight layout correction, an ADE-based enhancement, and an AFCAD update with optional crosswind operations. Install only one airport-layout file at a time to prevent conflicts.
Which KDFW scenery add-on should I choose?
Choose the fuller scenery package for visual detail, the lightweight layout for basic corrections, the ADE file for a middle ground, or the AFCAD update when runway and AI parking behaviour matter most.
| Option | Best for | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Fuller KDFW Terminal D scenery package | A more substantial visual upgrade | Adds a detailed Terminal D, working jetways, updated airport objects and an improved airport layout. This is the most complete of the four options. |
| Lightweight KDFW layout correction | Improving the default airport without a large visual package | Corrects runway lengths, taxiway details, building placement and gate assignments while retaining more of FSX's default appearance. |
| ADE-based KDFW enhancement | A balance of layout and visual changes | Updates taxiways and ground textures while adding Terminal D and extra airside objects. |
| KDFW AFCAD operations update | AI traffic, parking and runway operation changes | Revises parking, taxiways and runway use, with an optional method for activating crosswind runways. |
If KDFW already causes low frame rates, start with the lightweight layout or AFCAD option. Object-rich terminals and animated jetways usually place more load on FSX than an airport-database update, although the result depends on traffic, scenery density and the rest of the Dallas area scenery.
“Updated” means improved relative to the airport represented by default FSX; it does not guarantee that every gate, taxiway or runway detail matches the latest real-world KDFW configuration.
Can I install more than one KDFW add-on?
No—these packages should be treated as alternatives because several contain their own KDFW airport-layout BGL.
A common mistake we see is combining a visual package containing an AFCAD with a second ADE or AFCAD update. FSX may then display duplicate terminals, misplaced taxiway signs, conflicting parking positions, AI aircraft using incorrect routes or scenery objects appearing at the wrong elevation.
Keep one third-party KDFW layout active. Do not disable FSX's original core airport file, because default airport BGLs normally contain data for numerous airports. Disable or remove only the competing add-on file, preferably after making a backup.
Do these KDFW add-ons work in FSX: Steam Edition?
Yes, conventional FSX scenery and airport BGL packages generally work in FSX: Steam Edition because it uses the same basic scenery system.
The usual problem is an older installer looking for the boxed FSX directory and creating files in the wrong location. Point the installer to the actual Steam Edition installation folder, or install manually when the supplied documentation permits. Avoid allowing an installer to create a second, unused FSX folder elsewhere on the computer.
How should I install KDFW scenery without conflicts?
- Close FSX and extract the download. Do not run the scenery directly from its archive.
- Read the included instructions. A complete scenery package may contain separate
sceneryandtexturefolders, while an ADE or AFCAD update may consist mainly of a single BGL. - Back up any existing KDFW add-on. Search active add-on folders for files referring to KDFW or DFW, but leave the simulator's core airport files untouched.
- Preserve the supplied folder structure. When possible, use a dedicated folder beneath the add-on scenery location and register it through the FSX Scenery Library.
- Give the airport suitable priority. Place the KDFW entry above broad regional scenery, but disable genuine duplicate airport layouts rather than relying on priority alone.
- Restart and inspect the airport. Check gates, taxiways, runway starts, AI routing and terrain elevation before adding other Dallas-area scenery.
Why are the jetways or AI aircraft not working correctly?
Jetways require a compatible gate and aircraft parking position; with the default control assignment, use Ctrl+J and ensure advanced animations are enabled. A jetway may still miss an aircraft whose door or exit data does not align with the scenery.
Incorrect AI parking or runway use usually points to a duplicate AFCAD, unsuitable parking codes, or the wrong optional runway configuration. Test with only the chosen KDFW package active before changing traffic settings or reinstalling the entire airport.
