Compare four freeware FSX KMCO scenery add-ons for Orlando, including gates, parking, jetways, ILS updates, Steam Edition caveats and conflicts.
For FSX and FSX: Steam Edition, four freeware KMCO options in our library update Orlando International Airport: a broad V2.0 scenery package, two detailed AFCAD-style airport refreshes and a lighter makeover. Choose one as your active KMCO layout; installing several together can create duplicate airport data, conflicting gates, AI-routing faults or misplaced features.
Which freeware Orlando scenery packages are available?
Four packages provide different combinations of airport layout, parking, navigation and visual changes at KMCO.
| Package | Best suited to | Main KMCO changes |
|---|---|---|
| Broad KMCO V2.0 package | The most extensive all-round update in this group | Corrected ILS and DME data, revised gates and parking, functional jetways, gate signs and airline-specific ramp assignments. It was prepared for FSX SP2. |
| Expanded-parking AFCAD package | Improving operations while retaining the default-airport basis | Additional parking, airline-coded gates, cargo areas, service roads, fuel trucks and a lighted helipad. |
| Lighter Orlando airport makeover | A modest refresh of the stock KMCO layout | Assigned and expanded parking, updated taxiways and signs, rebuilt service roads, extra fuel trucks and a lighted helipad. |
| Airline-gate and heavy-jet layout | Users prioritising airline assignments and large-aircraft parking | Revised gate allocation, airline parking codes and stands designed to accept heavy jets. |
An AFCAD-style add-on primarily changes FSX airport facility data: runways, taxiways, parking positions, frequencies and related records. It does not necessarily replace the terminal with a fully modelled custom building, so check the included documentation if custom structures are essential to you.
Which KMCO scenery should I choose?
Choose according to the feature you need rather than combining packages.
- Use V2.0 when corrected ILS/DME details, gate signs and working jetways matter most.
- Use the detailed AFCAD when AI parking, cargo positions and airline-coded gates are the priority.
- Use the lighter makeover for a straightforward improvement to the default airport without seeking the broadest feature set.
- Use the heavy-jet layout when suitable large-aircraft stands and airline gate assignments are your main concern.
These packages represent different interpretations of KMCO rather than four stages of one upgrade. They may also reflect the airport configuration from the period in which each file was created, so do not assume that every terminal or gate matches Orlando's later real-world development.
Can I install more than one KMCO add-on?
No—keep only one airport-layout package active unless its documentation explicitly says that another file is required.
Multiple KMCO airport BGL files can produce duplicate parking positions, mismatched taxi instructions, AI aircraft using unexpected stands or conflicting approach data. Scenery Library priority may decide which elements appear, but it does not reliably cure every conflict between overlapping airport records.
A mistake we see constantly is disabling one scenery-library entry while leaving an older KMCO BGL loose inside Addon Scenery\scenery. If a problem remains, inspect previously installed packages as well as the visible library entries. Do not delete or rename FSX's stock scenery files.
Will these work in FSX: Steam Edition?
FSX: Steam Edition can load normal FSX-format scenery BGL files, so these packages may work when installed in the correct Steam library location. The V2.0 package specifically targets FSX SP2, however, and an old automatic installer may search only for the boxed edition's folder or registry entry.
If an installer cannot find FSX, use its browse option to select the Steam Edition installation folder. Where the package permits manual installation, extract it and add the scenery through FSX instead. Preserve any supplied scenery and texture subfolders rather than copying a folder blindly into another folder with the same name.
How do I install and test KMCO scenery?
- Read the included instructions. Some downloads are complete scenery areas; others contain only airport BGL files with a specified destination.
- Disable competing Orlando scenery. Untick separate KMCO entries in the Scenery Library and temporarily move loose third-party KMCO files out of active scenery folders.
- Add the correct folder level. When a package has its own
sceneryand optionaltexturefolders, add their parent folder as the scenery area. - Set sensible priority. Place the airport above broad Florida or regional scenery. If the regional product includes its own KMCO airport file, that file may still need to be disabled.
- Reload FSX and test. Check runway placement, taxi signs, parking positions, AI movement and approach frequencies before restoring other scenery.
Why are the gates, jetways or ILS data still wrong?
The symptom usually identifies the remaining conflict or limitation.
| Symptom | Likely cause or fix |
|---|---|
| AI aircraft ignore airline gates | The AI aircraft need matching parking codes, and their parking radius must fit the stand. Coded scenery alone does not create or reassign traffic. |
| A jetway does not move | Park accurately at a supported gate, use an aircraft with a suitable exit definition and check that advanced animations are enabled. FSX normally operates a compatible jetway with Ctrl+J. |
| The FMS and airport ILS disagree | A scenery BGL can alter FSX airport and approach data, but a third-party aircraft may use a separate navigation database. Updating the scenery does not update that database. |
| Aircraft float or sit below the ground | Another airport-altitude or regional mesh file is probably active. Disable competing KMCO files first; changing library order alone may not remove an altitude correction. |
| Two sets of gates or taxi instructions appear | More than one KMCO airport layout remains active, often as a loose BGL outside the package's main scenery entry. |
