When is frozen water actually landable in MSFS 2024?
A frozen-looking surface is landable only when MSFS 2024 assigns that part of the water body a solid surface and collision. Its appearance can vary with location, date, weather conditions and scenery data, while boundaries between ice, water and shoreline are not always consistent.
There is no cockpit indication confirming that the ice is load-bearing. Outside air temperature below freezing is a useful clue, but changing to a cold weather preset shortly before landing does not guarantee that a white lake has become solid. MSFS 2024 should not be treated as a real-world ice-thickness model.
Rivers demand extra caution because bridges, bends, steep banks and short unfrozen sections leave little room for correction. Lakes provide more space for a reconnaissance pass and let you remain well away from troublesome shoreline geometry.
Which aircraft should you use on frozen lakes?
A ski-equipped bush aircraft is the best option for snow-covered ice, while wheels can work on firm, smooth surfaces with very little braking grip.

How do you land on a frozen lake or river safely?
Make a reconnaissance pass before committing, then use a slow, stabilised approach aligned into the wind.
- Test in Free Flight first. Do not make an unfamiliar frozen surface your first attempt during a Career mission or challenge, where a reset may carry a penalty.

- Inspect the entire rollout. Fly a low pass looking for dark patches, abrupt texture changes, ridges and objects. Visual inspection reduces risk but cannot prove that collision is present.
- Approach into the wind. Use the same stabilised approach principles covered in our guide to approach, flare and touchdown technique, but plan for almost no braking assistance.
- Touch down gently. Keep the wings level, use a low but safe touchdown speed and avoid dropping the aircraft onto the surface. With a taildragger, hold the tail down as speed decays.
- Let the aircraft slow gradually. Avoid sharp steering inputs and heavy wheel braking. Ski aircraft often need careful rudder and power inputs to turn, especially at low speed.
Why does the aircraft sink or crash on the ice?
The usual cause is that the surface looks frozen but is still being treated as water, or that the aircraft has struck a shoreline seam, snow ridge or hidden object.
- Immediate splash or sinking: that section does not have solid ice collision. Choose another water body or use a properly configured floatplane on confirmed open water.
- Sudden nose-over: the snow may be deeper or rougher than it appears, or excessive braking has loaded the nosewheel. Try skis, reduce touchdown speed and keep the elevator aft during rollout.
- Impact near the bank: water masks and terrain can meet unevenly. Land farther from the shoreline and avoid crossing from ice onto land while moving quickly.
- A location behaves differently after installing scenery: third-party scenery can alter water masks or terrain. Retest the site without the add-on before blaming the aircraft.
Turning off crash damage may prevent the flight from ending, but it does not make an unsupported water polygon solid. If the aircraft splashes through during a test, moving to another lake is more reliable than repeating the same approach.
Does a frozen-lake landing count as an airport landing?
Usually not: it is an off-airport landing even when the aircraft stops safely. ATC will not treat the ice as a runway, and Career missions or challenges may reject the landing unless the frozen surface lies inside the required objective area.
