Learn how to line up with the runway centreline in a flight simulator using cockpit sightlines, small corrections, wind drift and ILS guidance.
To line up with the runway centreline in a flight simulator, establish final early and use small, coordinated bank corrections to keep your ground track centred between the runway edges. Look towards the far end, monitor the aiming point and, in wind, hold a crab rather than forcing the nose straight.
How to line up with the runway on final approach
The method is consistent across general flight simulators: establish the correct cockpit view, intercept the extended centreline early and make progressively smaller corrections as the runway approaches.
- Reset the cockpit view. Use the normal pilot eye position and a fixed, comfortable zoom. Re-centre head tracking before final; a camera shifted sideways can make a correctly positioned aircraft look off-centre.
- Establish the extended centreline early. In a circuit, time the base-to-final turn so that you roll out on the centreline extension rather than crossing it. On a straight-in approach, a shallow intercept of roughly 20–30 degrees is easier to control than an aggressive turn towards the runway.
- Use the whole runway picture. Look towards the far end while monitoring the centreline and both runway edges with peripheral vision. Bank gently towards the required track, use enough rudder to coordinate the turn, then level the wings before crossing the centreline.
- Keep lateral and vertical guidance separate. The centreline controls left-right position; a selected aiming point in the touchdown zone controls the descent path. The aiming point should remain nearly stationary in the windscreen during a stable approach. - Correct for wind using ground track. The aircraft's nose may point into the wind while its actual path remains over the centreline. Do not remove this crab merely because the nose looks crooked; use the techniques in our crosswind alignment and touchdown guide.
- Shift your gaze during the flare. Look progressively towards the far end instead of staring just over the nose. Use rudder to align the aircraft's longitudinal axis and appropriate aileron to prevent sideways drift, then continue steering along the centreline after touchdown.
What should an aligned runway look like?
An aligned runway should stop moving sideways in the cockpit view, with your flight path remaining midway between its edges. The centreline markings and runway edges should converge consistently towards the far end rather than sliding across the windscreen.
Do not assume the painted line must sit in the exact centre of the monitor. In a multi-seat aircraft, the pilot eye position is offset from the aircraft's longitudinal axis, so the centreline can appear slightly to one side at close range. Learn a repeatable cockpit reference for that aircraft and judge movement against the runway edges as well as the stripe.
On an unmarked runway or grass strip, mentally divide both the near and far runway widths in half. Keeping those two midpoints aligned provides an effective substitute for painted centreline markings.
Why do I keep drifting off the centreline?
Persistent centreline drift usually comes from confusing aircraft heading with ground track, looking too close to the nose or making corrections that are too large.

Can I use the ILS to find the runway centreline?
Yes—the ILS localiser provides electronic lateral guidance towards the runway centreline when the runway and aircraft support it. Set and identify the correct frequency, select the proper front course and intercept from a shallow angle; approach mode cannot compensate for an incorrect setup.
The localiser becomes more sensitive close to the runway, so avoid chasing every needle movement. Simulator-specific controls differ: we have separate procedures for setting up and tracking an ILS in FSX and for capturing the localiser in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
If the localiser and visible runway disagree, the real approach may use an offset localiser, or the simulator's navigation data and scenery may not match. Do not force a sharp last-second correction solely to centre the needle; use the published approach information and the visible runway picture, or go around.
When should I go around?
Go around when the centreline cannot be maintained with small corrections, the base-to-final turn has been overshot, or alignment still requires aggressive bank or yaw close to touchdown. Trying to rescue an unstable approach usually produces a runway-edge touchdown, a bounce or a departure from the paved surface.
