Why won't Microsoft Flight Simulator shut down?

When Microsoft Flight Simulator will not shut down, first wait a few minutes for content activity and save synchronisation to finish, then use the simulator or platform's normal quit command. If it remains stuck, end the app in Windows Task Manager or close it from the console dashboard. Avoid cutting power.

Is Microsoft Flight Simulator actually stuck?

A shutdown is genuinely stuck when the window remains unresponsive and its disk, network and processor activity stays near idle for several minutes. A temporary Not responding message does not prove that the simulator has frozen; Windows may display it while MSFS releases memory or writes data.

Wait longer if the Content Manager is installing packages, the simulator is saving career progress, or the platform is displaying a synchronisation message. Ending a flight is also separate from closing the application. Returning to the main menu does not shut down MSFS, while going to the Xbox or PlayStation home screen can leave it suspended in the background.

How can I close MSFS safely when it is frozen?

The safest method is to stop active downloads, attempt a normal exit once, and force-close only the simulator process if it does not respond.

1. End the flight if the controls still work. Return to the main menu before quitting so MSFS can record the flight and progression data. For the newer simulator, follow the normal MSFS 2024 end-flight and menu procedure.
2. Check for content activity. Do not force-close MSFS while it is visibly downloading or installing an aircraft, scenery package or simulator update. Pause or cancel through the interface if that option still responds.
3. Try the normal close command once. On PC, use the simulator's quit option or press Alt+F4. On Xbox, open the dashboard menu for the game and choose Quit; simply returning Home is not enough. On PlayStation 5, use the system's Close Game command.
4. Allow a few minutes for shutdown. On PC, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and watch the Microsoft Flight Simulator entry. Continuing disk or network activity suggests that it is still finishing work.
5. End only the simulator task. If activity has stopped and MSFS remains frozen, select Microsoft Flight Simulator in Task Manager and choose End task. Do not terminate Windows Explorer, Gaming Services or unrelated Xbox processes.
6. Restart the platform if necessary. If Steam, the Xbox app or the console still reports the game as running after its process has disappeared, restart that client or restart the device normally. Do not unplug the console or hold the PC's power button unless the entire operating system is unresponsive.

The PlayStation instructions apply only to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was not released for PlayStation.

Will force-closing Microsoft Flight Simulator damage it?

Force-closing a hung Microsoft Flight Simulator process usually does not damage the installation, but unsaved flight or career progress since the last autosave may be lost. The greater risk comes from interrupting a package installation, simulator update or active cache write.

An abnormal-shutdown or Safe Mode prompt at the next launch does not itself mean files are damaged. Choose Safe Mode when you suspect an add-on caused the hang; choose the normal start only when the shutdown was clearly unrelated to installed content.
