MSFS 2024 usually freezes mid-flight because an add-on misbehaves, streamed scenery or the rolling cache stalls, the CPU or GPU runs out of headroom, or a driver or unstable overclock fails. Test a default aircraft with add-ons disabled, clear the cache, reduce traffic and detail, then repair files and drivers.
What does the freeze pattern tell you?
The location, timing and behaviour of the freeze usually identify which part of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 needs attention.

A streaming problem normally causes pauses, blurry terrain or missing scenery rather than permanently locking the entire computer. A frozen picture with continuing audio often points towards the renderer, graphics driver or VRAM pressure, while a complete system restart is more likely to be hardware or driver related.
How do I fix MSFS 2024 freezing during a flight?
The fastest method is to test one failure category at a time, starting with add-ons and cached data before reinstalling anything.
- Restart the entire system. Close MSFS 2024 rather than resuming a suspended session, then restart the PC or console. On Xbox, avoid Quick Resume while diagnosing the problem. Recreate the freeze with the same aircraft, route, weather and departure conditions.
- Run a clean add-on test. On PC, move everything out of the active
Communityfolder and disable third-party packages that are installed elsewhere. Add-on managers can leave links in that folder, and some Marketplace or library content is not stored there at all. Delete the existing cache through the simulator's data settings, recreate it or leave it disabled for a test flight, and temporarily turn off photogrammetry. - Reduce the settings that cause frame-time spikes. Lower Terrain Level of Detail, Object Level of Detail, live or AI traffic, airport ground traffic and other CPU-heavy options. Reduce texture resolution when GPU memory is close to capacity. Do not turn every setting to Low: use the targeted MSFS 2024 performance adjustments to separate a main-thread bottleneck from GPU or VRAM pressure.
- Remove background hooks and overlays. Close recording overlays, hardware-monitoring overlays, frame-generation injectors, shader tools and external avionics or traffic utilities. Leave the Windows page file system-managed and ensure the drive has enough free space; disabling virtual memory can turn high memory use into a lock-up.
- Update and repair the installation. Install simulator, operating-system and graphics-driver updates, then use the platform's repair or file-verification function. If the problem started after a GPU driver change, a clean installation of a known-stable driver is a better diagnostic step than repeatedly changing graphics settings.
- Test hardware at stock settings. Remove CPU and GPU overclocks or undervolts, and temporarily disable aggressive memory profiles if the whole PC hangs or restarts. Why does MSFS 2024 freeze only after several hours?
Freezes that develop gradually usually come from accumulating memory use, traffic, a complex aircraft or an external utility rather than one damaged scenery tile.
On PC, compare RAM, committed memory and dedicated GPU memory shortly after departure and again when performance starts falling. Usage that keeps climbing without settling does not prove the simulator itself is at fault; aircraft, traffic injectors, avionics connections and scenery utilities can grow alongside it.
Repeat the same long sector with a default aircraft, no third-party utilities and reduced traffic. If that remains stable, restore one item per flight. Lowering texture quality may delay a VRAM-related freeze, but it will not repair an add-on that continually consumes memory.
What changes on Xbox Series X|S and PS5?
The diagnosis is the same on console, but there is no Community-folder or graphics-driver step.
- Fully quit MSFS 2024 and restart the console instead of resuming the suspended session.
- Test a default aircraft with third-party aircraft and scenery disabled or removed.
- Clear or disable the rolling cache where that option is available, then test without photogrammetry.
- Make sure the console has adequate free storage and is not overheating inside a confined cabinet.
- Reinstall only the suspect content package first; leave a complete simulator reinstall until other tests fail.
Should I reinstall MSFS 2024?
A full reinstall should be the last step because it does not fix unstable hardware, an overloaded connection, a corrupt rolling cache or an add-on that will be downloaded again.
Repair or verify the base installation first. Reinstall only when the simulator still freezes with a default aircraft, third-party content disabled, a cleared cache, stock hardware settings and an otherwise stable system. If one route or aircraft alone triggers the problem, remove that package rather than the whole simulator.
