Fix black squares in MSFS 2024 by isolating add-ons, rebuilding shader caches, checking GPU drivers and VRAM, and diagnosing terrain tiles.
Black squares in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 usually come from a corrupted shader cache, broken aircraft or scenery textures, a graphics-driver fault, or exhausted VRAM. Restart the sim, test with add-ons disabled, rebuild the shader caches, update the GPU driver, then reduce texture resolution and terrain detail if the artefacts return under load.
What causes black squares in MSFS 2024?
The position and behaviour of the black squares usually identify the cause more accurately than the squares themselves.
| What you see | Most likely cause |
|---|---|
| Squares on one aircraft, instrument panel or livery | Missing, damaged or incompatible texture and material files |
| A rectangular ground tile fixed to one location | Scenery package, streamed world data or rolling-cache problem |
| Blocks that change when the camera moves | Shader corruption, upscaling artefacts or a graphics-driver problem |
| Squares appearing after time at a detailed airport | VRAM pressure, especially with high-resolution textures and detailed add-ons |
| Artefacts visible on the display but absent from screenshots | HDR, VRR, cable, display or output-path problem rather than the simulator renderer |
If the corruption appears in a screenshot or recording, MSFS or the GPU rendered it. If a clean screenshot does not contain the squares, test another display input or cable and temporarily disable HDR and variable refresh rate.
How do I remove black squares on PC?
On PC, isolate the renderer from add-ons first, then rebuild its caches and reduce VRAM load.
- Restart cleanly. Exit Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 completely and restart Windows. Disable ReShade, recording hooks, performance overlays and GPU filters for the test; restarting only the flight does not clear every graphics resource.
- Test without Community add-ons. Move the contents of the
Communityfolder to a temporary location, then repeat the problem with a built-in aircraft, default livery and built-in airport. If that works, restore add-ons in groups until the faulty package is identified. Also disable any recently installed aircraft, livery or scenery package managed through the simulator. - Rebuild the shader caches. Corrupted DirectX or driver shaders can produce black blocks that move with the camera. Follow our safe shader-cache rebuilding procedure, then expect the first flight to stutter while shaders are compiled again.
- Return graphics settings to a baseline. Temporarily disable Frame Generation, change from DLSS or another temporal upscaler to TAA, and lower Texture Resolution, Terrain Level of Detail and Object Level of Detail. Restart the simulator after changing texture settings. If the profile itself may be damaged, use these steps to restore MSFS 2024 graphics settings to their defaults.
- Repair the GPU driver. Install a stable driver for the graphics card. If the fault began immediately after a driver change, a clean installation or return to the previous stable driver is a better test than repeatedly changing simulator settings.
- Remove instability and VRAM pressure. Return the GPU and VRAM to stock clock speeds, close GPU-heavy background applications and test a lower texture setting. Squares that appear only after loading a complex airport strongly suggest memory pressure. Crashes, checkerboarding or driver resets should be handled with our graphics-device and VRAM troubleshooting checks.
- Repair the installation last. Use the platform's file verification or repair function to replace damaged official files. Preserve the isolated
Communityfolder separately, because verification may not inspect third-party content.
Change one category at a time and repeat the same flight. Applying a driver update, deleting caches and changing six graphics settings together may remove the symptom, but it leaves no way to identify what caused it.
Why do black squares appear on only one aircraft?
Black squares confined to one aircraft or livery almost always indicate a package-level texture or material fault.
Test the aircraft with its default livery, then test another built-in aircraft at the same location. If only the custom livery fails, remove duplicate versions and reinstall or update that livery alone. If every livery for one third-party aircraft fails, isolate the whole aircraft package rather than reinstalling MSFS 2024.
Can scenery streaming cause black ground tiles?
Yes, streaming trouble can produce square or rectangular ground areas that stay anchored to a geographic location.
Check the connection, restart online world data between simulator sessions and recreate the rolling cache if it is enabled. Do not delete unrelated package folders: a terrain tile problem needs the targeted scenery-streaming and cache checks, not repeated shader deletion. A tile affecting only one add-on airport points instead to that scenery package.
What should I do on Xbox or PlayStation?
Console users should concentrate on installed content, streamed data and a complete power cycle because GPU drivers and shader folders are not manually serviceable.
- Quit rather than suspend. Close MSFS 2024 fully, shut down the console rather than leaving it in Rest Mode or Quick Resume, and restart it.
- Test default content. Use a built-in aircraft and livery away from third-party scenery. Remove or disable the suspect add-on if the squares disappear.
- Check online data. A fixed black terrain tile may be failed streamed scenery rather than a console graphics fault. Test again on a stable connection.
- Separate display faults from rendered faults. Capture a console screenshot. If the screenshot is clean but the television still shows squares, test HDR, VRR, another HDMI input and another cable.
Do I need to reinstall MSFS 2024?
A complete reinstall is rarely the first fix for black squares because it does not repair an unstable driver, overloaded VRAM or an incompatible add-on.
Reinstall only after default content fails with add-ons disabled, shader and rolling caches have been rebuilt, graphics settings have been reset, and file repair has found no solution. On PC, keep the Community folder renamed during the first clean launch; otherwise the same faulty package can load immediately and make the reinstall appear unsuccessful.
