Which MSFS 2024 settings should I change for VATSIM?

Adam McEnroe
In short

Use the right MSFS 2024 VATSIM settings to prevent duplicate traffic, keep live weather working, avoid ATC conflicts and improve performance.

Before flying on VATSIM in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, leave Online Functionality enabled for streamed scenery and weather, but switch Multiplayer, live air traffic and AI traffic off. Set parked or static aircraft to zero or very low, disable assisted ATC, and let vPilot inject network traffic and handle radio communications.

MSFS 2024 VATSIM settings checklist

The safest baseline uses one source of moving aircraft—vPilot—and no simulator-generated traffic. Setting names and menu groupings can change slightly between simulator updates, but these are the controls to look for.

MSFS 2024 settingRecommended valueReason
Online FunctionalityOnRetains streamed scenery and MSFS live weather.
MultiplayerOffPrevents ordinary MSFS multiplayer aircraft appearing alongside VATSIM traffic.
Real-world or live air trafficOffStops the simulator adding a second set of real-world flights.
AI or offline aircraft trafficOffPrevents computer-controlled aircraft mixing with the VATSIM network.
Parked, ground or static aircraftZero preferredKeeps gates clear and avoids decorative aircraft occupying a VATSIM stand.
Airport vehicles and workersLow if performance is limitedReduces main-thread load at busy airports without removing VATSIM traffic.
Assisted ATC or AI radio communicationsOffStops the simulator changing frequencies or responding to its own ATC.
WeatherLive recommendedKeeps wind, pressure and runway conditions reasonably close to those used by controllers.
TimeLive recommended, not requiredMatches network day and night conditions but does not affect connectivity.

Which traffic settings prevent duplicate aircraft?

Disable every MSFS aircraft source except the traffic injected by vPilot. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 can otherwise display several independent traffic layers at once:

  • Multiplayer traffic represents other MSFS users, not necessarily VATSIM pilots.
  • Live air traffic represents real-world flights supplied by the simulator.
  • AI or offline traffic creates computer-controlled aircraft.
  • Parked or static aircraft fills gates with decorative models that cannot respond to a controller.

vPilot-injected aircraft do not require those MSFS traffic sources to be enabled. A mistake we see constantly is increasing an AI density slider because VATSIM traffic seems sparse; that only adds unrelated aircraft and does not increase the number of connected pilots.

At a large hub, reducing static aircraft, service vehicles and airport workers can also recover performance. Our explanation of how traffic and airport-activity sliders affect frame rate covers those trade-offs without removing network traffic.

Should Online Functionality stay on for VATSIM?

Yes, leave Online Functionality on if you use streamed scenery, photogrammetry or MSFS live weather, while keeping Multiplayer off. These are separate controls: disabling multiplayer prevents duplicate pilots, whereas disabling all online services can remove useful simulator data.

VATSIM traffic comes through the external pilot client rather than MSFS Multiplayer. If the distinction is unclear, see where the Online Functionality switch sits and what it controls.

Should I use live weather and live time on VATSIM?

Live weather is recommended, but VATSIM does not require a particular MSFS weather preset or clock setting. The operational priority is matching the controller's reported pressure, surface wind and runway conditions closely enough to fly the assigned procedure safely.

MSFS live weather and the controller's ATIS may occasionally differ because their observations and update timing are not identical. If the discrepancy is significant, manually reproduce the ATIS wind and pressure rather than changing runways independently. Exact cloud placement is not important.

Live time makes lighting and visual references agree with the network's real-world time. Controllers cannot rely on your simulator clock, however, so using daylight for visibility does not by itself stop VATSIM from working.

Which ATC and assistance settings should be disabled?

Turn off any assistance that answers ATC, manages radio frequencies or takes control of the aircraft without your command. Built-in MSFS ATC is completely separate from VATSIM and should not be allowed to retune the active frequency during a network flight.

Flight-model, checklist, control and navigation assistance can remain at whatever level lets you operate safely. VATSIM does not require maximum realism. The exception is an assist that unexpectedly flies the aircraft, changes the transponder or tunes a radio; disable that before connecting.

Microphone selection, speaker output, push-to-talk and radio volume are configured in vPilot, not by the MSFS Communications volume alone. Our broader guide explains the correct PC client, audio and connection setup for VATSIM.

Why do duplicate or incorrect aircraft still appear?

Persistent duplicates usually mean one traffic source remains active or the simulator has not cleared aircraft created earlier in the session. Check the following before changing model-matching packages:

  • The same moving aircraft appears twice: recheck Multiplayer and live traffic, then reload the flight if the old models remain.
  • A gate is occupied by a motionless aircraft: set every parked, ground or static aircraft density control to zero.
  • Aircraft have generic models or wrong liveries: this is a vPilot model-matching issue, not a reason to enable MSFS AI traffic.
  • No VATSIM aircraft appear: confirm that vPilot is connected and has usable models. Raising simulator AI density will not fix client injection.

Simulator updates or preset changes can sometimes restore previous traffic values. If a changed option reverts after restarting, use our fixes for MSFS 2024 settings that will not persist.

Can Xbox or PS5 use these VATSIM settings?

No—normal VATSIM operation with MSFS 2024 requires a Windows PC because vPilot must run alongside the simulator. Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PS5 Pro cannot run that external client, so switching off console traffic does not add VATSIM support.
