A blank PMDG 737 weather radar in Microsoft Flight Simulator usually means either the build does not provide an operative radar for that simulator version, or the radar has no precipitation to paint. Confirm feature support first; then check updates, WXR mode, ND selection, range, tilt and avionics power before treating it as a fault.
Is weather radar supported in your PMDG 737 version?
The original PMDG 737 releases for MSFS 2020 shipped with weather radar inoperative because the simulator did not expose the weather data required by PMDG's custom radar system. The cockpit controls could be moved, but that did not make weather returns available.
Later aircraft packages and MSFS 2024 compatibility builds must be judged by the feature list and release notes supplied with that exact build. Do not assume that radar support in another aircraft, or even another PMDG product, means your 737 package supports it. How do you test PMDG 737 weather radar correctly?
A valid test needs a supported aircraft build, a powered navigation display and obvious precipitation ahead of the aircraft. Overcast sky alone is not enough.
- Identify the simulator and package. Confirm whether you are running MSFS 2020 or MSFS 2024 and that the installed PMDG package is intended for it. Do not copy an old aircraft folder into a newer simulator and assume every system will work.
- Update the aircraft through its proper channel. Use our PMDG 737 update and repair procedure. Marketplace installations may receive core aircraft updates through the simulator's content system rather than the same route as direct installations.
- Power the aircraft completely. Bring the generators, avionics and navigation displays online, then check display brightness. If the whole screen is blank, follow our avionics power and blank-screen checks.
- Configure the radar. Select the weather mode on the radar panel where available, use automatic gain initially, and select the WXR overlay on the relevant EFIS control panel. Test in a forward-looking ND mode rather than PLAN mode.
- Choose a useful range and tilt. Start at roughly 20–40 NM with tilt near neutral, then move it slowly downwards while airborne. Excessive upward tilt looks into clear sky; excessive downward tilt can produce ground clutter or hide useful weather behind it.
- Use controlled precipitation. Load a weather preset containing obvious rain ahead and test airborne. This separates an aircraft problem from missing or delayed Live Weather data. MSFS 2024 users can compare the setup with our radar power, range and tilt walkthrough.
Can the PMDG 737 radar detect clouds?
Weather radar paints precipitation, not ordinary cloud cover. Convective rain produces the clearest green, amber and red returns; thin cloud, fog or dry frozen precipitation may produce little or nothing, depending on how the simulator and aircraft implement radar data.
The terrain overlay is separate. A working TERR display proves that the navigation display has power, but it does not prove that the weather radar is operating or receiving precipitation data.
Why does radar work with preset weather but not Live Weather?
If a rain preset produces returns but Live Weather does not, the PMDG radar itself is working. The live session may contain no paintable precipitation at your position, the weather feed may not have loaded correctly, or the visible cloud depiction may not match the precipitation data available to the radar.
Move to a reported area of substantial rain, allow the weather session time to populate and vary the range and tilt. Restarting or reinstalling the aircraft is unlikely to help when preset weather already works.
Should you reinstall the PMDG 737?
Reinstall only when the exact build is documented as supporting weather radar and it still fails in controlled rain after a correct setup. First remove outdated cockpit or panel modifications, update the aircraft, and reload it from a clean state.
A reinstall cannot enable a radar that is intentionally unsupported. If the feature is supported, install the package intended for your simulator version rather than migrating aircraft files manually between MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024.
