Which 777 is more realistic?

PMDG is our pick for the more consistent full-flight procedural simulation, but FlightFactor v2 is not a lightweight alternative. Both target serious airliner operation; the difference is how completely and consistently each build reproduces the entire flight rather than how many cockpit switches can be clicked.

Realism should be judged across the FMC, VNAV, autopilot and flight director, electrical and hydraulic dependencies, fuel management, pressurisation, performance calculations and abnormal operation. PMDG generally has fewer rough edges across that complete workflow. With FlightFactor, check the implemented-feature list for the exact v2 build rather than assuming every displayed function is finished.

Do not judge either aircraft's VNAV after importing a route and immediately departing. Enter the aircraft weight, reserves, cost index, cruise level, winds and take-off performance, then resolve route discontinuities. A rejected waypoint or unexpected descent can also come from mismatched navigation-data cycles rather than faulty aircraft logic.

Manual handling is less decisive. PMDG's aircraft operates inside the MSFS flight model, while FlightFactor uses X-Plane's environment. Control sensitivity, duplicated rudder and tiller assignments, excessive dead zones and hardware noise can make either 777 feel worse than it is.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the 777 made for the simulator you already prefer unless you are prepared to change the rest of your simulation setup as well.

  • Choose PMDG if MSFS is your main simulator, you value a polished airline workflow, or you want the simulator's broader scenery and weather presentation around the aircraft.
  • Choose FlightFactor v2 if X-Plane 12 is your established platform, you rely on X-Plane datarefs or control profiles, or you strongly prefer its handling and replay environment.
  • Choose PMDG when you own both simulators if your priority is the most cohesive overall 777 experience rather than a particular base simulator's physics.
  • Choose FlightFactor when you own both if X-Plane itself is the reason you simulate: switching to MSFS solely for one aircraft rarely makes sense once scenery, controls and utilities are considered.

What version pitfalls should you check before buying?

Most bad purchases happen because the simmer compares reviews of different product generations or assumes compatibility from the aircraft name alone.

  1. Confirm the simulator. PMDG's MSFS 777 is separate from its older FSX and Prepar3D generation. FlightFactor is an X-Plane product.
  2. Identify the FlightFactor generation. The original FlightFactor 777 belongs to an older X-Plane generation and should not be used to judge 777 v2 graphics, systems or handling.
  3. Check the exact 777 variant. Never assume that one purchase includes every passenger and freighter model, engine option or expansion.

Which 777 has better performance?

There is no trustworthy universal frame-rate winner because PMDG and FlightFactor run in different rendering engines. Airport scenery, traffic, clouds, glass-cockpit refresh rates, resolution and processor limits can outweigh the aircraft itself.

For a useful comparison, load each aircraft cold and dark at a default airport, use matching weather and traffic conditions, remain in the cockpit view and wait for scenery loading to settle. Compare CPU and GPU frame time as well as average frame rate. If one test uses a detailed third-party hub and the other uses an empty default airport, the result says little about the aircraft.

Stutters immediately after loading are not necessarily an add-on fault. Shader compilation, scenery streaming, traffic injection and background utilities can all produce temporary pauses. Persistent poor performance should first be checked with third-party scenery and traffic disabled.

Our verdict

PMDG 777 wins overall for MSFS-based long-haul simulation and procedural polish. FlightFactor 777 v2 is the better answer only when X-Plane 12 is your preferred platform or its handling and integration matter more to you than PMDG's more cohesive airline workflow.
