Set up PSVR2 for Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC with the adapter, SteamVR and OpenXR, then fix headset detection, controls and poor performance.
To use PSVR2 with Microsoft Flight Simulator on PC, connect the headset through Sony’s PlayStation VR2 PC adapter, install the PlayStation VR2 App and SteamVR, make SteamVR the active OpenXR runtime, then launch the simulator and toggle VR mode. A direct DisplayPort connection to the graphics card is essential.
What do I need to use PSVR2 on PC?
The supported PC connection requires the PlayStation VR2 PC adapter; plugging the headset into an ordinary USB-C port is not enough.
- PlayStation VR2 headset: Keep both Sense controllers available for initial pairing, calibration and firmware updates.
- PlayStation VR2 PC adapter: Connect its power, USB and video interfaces as directed by the setup application.
- DisplayPort 1.4 cable: The official adapter does not include this cable. It must connect the adapter to a compatible output on the discrete graphics card, not the motherboard’s display output.
- USB 3.0 port: Connect the adapter directly where possible rather than through an unpowered hub.
- Compatible Bluetooth: This is required for the Sense controllers, although the headset’s inside-out tracking does not require external base stations.
- A VR-capable PC: Meeting the simulator’s minimum flat-screen requirements does not guarantee comfortable VR performance. Compare the machine with our PC hardware guidance for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Laptop users need particular care: the video output must be connected to the discrete GPU. A standard HDMI output or a USB-C port wired only to integrated graphics will not provide the required DisplayPort path.
PSVR2 setup for Microsoft Flight Simulator
Set up the headset, SteamVR runtime and simulator controls in that order.
- Connect the adapter. Attach power and USB, run the DisplayPort cable directly from the adapter to the graphics card, connect the headset’s USB-C cable to the adapter and switch on the headset.
- Install the required software. Install SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App for PC, then run the PSVR2 application to update the headset and controller firmware.
- Complete headset calibration. Pair the Sense controllers over Bluetooth, follow the lens and tracking checks, and scan or define the play area from the seat you intend to use for flying.
- Select the OpenXR runtime. Open SteamVR’s OpenXR settings and confirm that SteamVR is the active runtime. If another headset’s runtime is active, switch to SteamVR and fully restart Microsoft Flight Simulator.
- Prepare the simulator controls. Search the keyboard assignments for
Toggle VRand bind it if necessary. The usual default isCtrl+Tab, but custom profiles can change or remove it. Also bind the command that resets or centres the VR camera. - Start in the correct order. Switch on PSVR2, start SteamVR and confirm that the headset is tracking. Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator on the monitor, load a flight and use the Toggle VR command.
- Centre the cockpit. Sit in your normal flying position, look straight ahead and reset the VR camera. Recentring while leaning forward is a common reason the instrument panel appears too close.

Cockpit controls and PC feature limitations
A yoke or joystick, throttle, pedals and mouse are usually more practical than the PSVR2 Sense controllers for flying. Motion-controller interaction can vary between simulator versions and individual aircraft, so a Sense pairing problem does not necessarily mean the headset itself has failed.
Sony’s supported PC implementation does not expose the complete PS5 feature set, including eye tracking, HDR, headset feedback, adaptive triggers and advanced controller haptics. Do not plan on Microsoft Flight Simulator using PSVR2 eye tracking for dynamic foveated rendering on PC.
Do I need the Steam version of Microsoft Flight Simulator?
No. Microsoft Store, Xbox app and Game Pass installations can use PSVR2 because the simulator talks to the active OpenXR runtime; SteamVR provides that runtime independently of where Microsoft Flight Simulator was purchased.
This PC method is also separate from native PS5 and PSVR2 support for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. Using the headset with a PC still requires the PC adapter and SteamVR route described above.
Why is PSVR2 not detected in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Most PSVR2 detection failures come from the physical video path or the wrong OpenXR runtime, not from Microsoft Flight Simulator itself.

If PSVR2 also fails in SteamVR, do not reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator yet—the fault is below the simulator layer. Work through our extended headset-detection and black-screen checks before changing the MSFS installation.
How do I improve PSVR2 performance in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
Start at 90 Hz rather than 120 Hz when SteamVR offers both, then tune for stable frame times instead of chasing maximum image quality.
- Avoid double supersampling: Do not raise both SteamVR’s per-application resolution and the in-simulator VR render scale at the same time. Keep one at its baseline while adjusting the other.
- If GPU-limited: Reduce VR render scale, clouds, shadows and anti-aliasing cost. DLSS can recover performance on supported graphics cards but may soften glass-cockpit text; TAA is often clearer but heavier.
- If CPU-limited: Lower terrain and object level of detail, road vehicles, airport activity and AI or live traffic. Reducing resolution will not cure a main-thread bottleneck.
- Test motion smoothing carefully: Reprojection can improve perceived cadence but may create distortion around propellers, wing edges and fast-moving cockpit frames.
- Change one setting at a time: Use the same aircraft, airport, weather and cockpit view when comparing changes.
