How do I recentre and adjust pilot position in MSFS VR?

Ian Stephens
In short

Learn how to recentre the MSFS VR view, adjust pilot height and seat position, bind the right control, and fix common cockpit offsets.

In Microsoft Flight Simulator VR, sit in your normal flying posture, look straight ahead, then activate Reset VR View; Space is the usual default binding. To change pilot position, use cockpit camera height/translation controls, or lean opposite the required movement, reset the VR view, and return to your normal posture.

How do I recentre the MSFS VR cockpit view?

Reset VR View makes the headset’s present position and direction the simulator’s centred cockpit reference. It is separate from the recenter function supplied by the headset platform.

  1. Start inside the cockpit. Load the flight and enter VR mode. If the headset is not yet running in the simulator, follow our instructions for entering and controlling VR in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
  2. Stabilise headset tracking. Make sure the headset has detected its play area or seated position and is not reporting lost tracking.
  3. Adopt your normal posture. Sit naturally, face the instrument panel and keep your head level. Do not lean towards the keyboard to press the reset control.
  4. Activate Reset VR View. Space is the usual keyboard default, but custom profiles may use another key or controller button. In the controls screen, select the active device profile and search for Reset VR View.
  5. Check the eyepoint. Confirm that the glare shield, primary instruments and outside view sit at a sensible height before adjusting anything further.

The controls-screen layout differs between Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, but the principle is the same: use the VR-view reset, not merely the general cockpit-camera reset. A mistake we see constantly is pressing Reset Cockpit View, which does not replace resetting the tracked VR origin.

How can I move the pilot higher, lower, forward or back?

The cleanest method is to bind the cockpit height and translation actions, but an offset reset works when those controls do not behave as expected in VR. For the offset method, move your head briefly in the opposite direction, activate Reset VR View, then return to your normal position.

Required pilot positionPose while resettingCamera action to bind
HigherLower your head slightlyIncrease cockpit view height
LowerRaise your head slightlyDecrease cockpit view height
Further forwardLean back slightlyTranslate cockpit view forward
Further backLean forward slightlyTranslate cockpit view backward
Further leftLean right slightlyTranslate cockpit view left
Further rightLean left slightlyTranslate cockpit view right

Search the cockpit-camera controls for terms such as height and translate cockpit view; labels and default assignments can differ between versions and control profiles. Make one small correction at a time. Combining a large camera translation with an offset reset can easily overcorrect the seat position.

Use modelled eye-position markers when the aircraft provides them. Otherwise, choose a height that leaves the primary instruments readable without placing the glare shield unnaturally high or low in your outside view.

Why does Reset VR View put me in the wrong place?

An incorrect reset usually records the wrong physical pose, uses the wrong control action or starts from faulty headset tracking.

  • Nothing happens: confirm that the binding belongs to the active keyboard or controller profile. Show all controls when searching, and remove any conflicting assignment.
  • The pilot is consistently too low or too far forward: you probably reset while slouching, leaning or reaching for the keyboard. Bind the action to a control you can reach without changing posture.
  • The world is tilted or drifting: correct the headset’s tracking area, floor level or seated origin first, then use the simulator’s Reset VR View command.
  • The position changes with the aircraft: each cockpit has its own default eyepoint. Re-centre after changing aircraft rather than assuming one position will suit every flight deck.
  • The view jumps unexpectedly: check for duplicate bindings and avoid triggering both the headset-platform recenter and the simulator reset at the same time.

Can I save a VR pilot position for each aircraft?

Custom cockpit views are the better choice for an aircraft-specific base eyepoint; Reset VR View is intended for aligning that view with your real seated posture. Our guide explains how to move the eyepoint and store custom cockpit views.

Saved camera behaviour can vary by aircraft and simulator version, and a preset does not replace headset recentering. Expect to use Reset VR View again after putting the headset back on, changing your physical seat position or recovering from lost tracking.
