The X56 is the better buy for most Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane and DCS users: it adds two dedicated analogue mini-sticks, configurable RGB lighting and the option of a warranty when bought new. Choose an X55 only when a fully tested used unit is substantially cheaper; the core HOTAS experience remains broadly similar.
What changed from the Saitek X55 to the X56?
The X56 is an evolution of the X55 rather than a complete redesign. Both have a spring-centred twist stick, interchangeable centring springs, split throttles, adjustable throttle resistance, mode controls, hats, rotaries and toggle switches.

The X56 name covers early blue-accented Saitek units and later grey Logitech-branded units. The Logitech branding identifies a newer production generation, but it is not proof that an individual controller is free from drift, wiring faults or USB problems.
Does the X56 fly better than the X55?
No, not by enough to justify replacing a healthy X55 purely for better pitch, roll or throttle control. Both use the same general large-base, spring-centred design, and neither provides force feedback or the smoother mechanism found in higher-end modular sticks.
The X56 gains a clear advantage in DCS when a radar cursor or targeting control accepts analogue axes. Its mini-sticks are also useful for cockpit cameras and six-axis spacecraft movement. In civilian flight simulation, they are convenient rather than essential; the main stick, throttles, rotaries and switches do most of the work.
Ergonomics matter as much as the specification sheet. Both systems occupy considerable desk space, and some buttons require a long reach for smaller hands. The throttle can feel very stiff after storage, so set its resistance control and work it through its full travel before judging it.
Which HOTAS should you buy?
Buy the X56 when prices are close; buy the X55 only when its discount compensates for its age and lack of warranty.
- Choose the X56 if you want analogue slew controls, configurable lighting, newer software support or the protection of buying new.
- Choose the X55 if a tested example costs substantially less and you only need the core stick, split throttles, hats and switches.
- Choose neither without checking fit if you have limited desk space or small hands. Both use much larger bases than a basic desktop joystick.
Is the X56 worth upgrading to from an X55?
The X56 is not a worthwhile upgrade from a reliable X55 unless you specifically need its two mini-sticks or your X55 is beginning to fail. It retains a similar control architecture, so spending money merely to obtain a newer version will not transform the flying feel.
If the X55 already tracks cleanly, a set of rudder pedals, secure desk mounts or a genuinely higher-grade stick base will usually change the experience more. For aircraft with conventional control columns, also consider whether a yoke or joystick better matches the aircraft you fly.
What should you test before buying a used X55 or X56?
Test every axis, button and throttle position before paying for either HOTAS, because condition matters more than the model name once both units are used.
- Open the Windows controller panel. Run

Check pitch, roll, twist, both throttles, rotaries and the X56 mini-sticks. Look for jumps, incomplete travel, unwanted movement or a centre that will not remain still.
- Test while moving the throttles. Hold buttons and switches in different states while sweeping both levers. Inputs that appear or disappear with throttle movement can indicate internal wiring wear rather than a software problem.
- Inspect the hardware. Check the USB leads, stick connector, threaded collar and supplied spring set. Older X55 soft-touch surfaces can become tacky with age.
- Confirm both USB devices are detected. The stick and throttle connect separately. A sale demonstration that shows only one half working is incomplete.
What problems are common to the X55 and X56?
The most common complaints are ghost button presses, axis jitter, profile-software trouble and stiff throttle movement.
- Ghost presses: Connect the stick and throttle directly to rear motherboard ports and try placing them on different USB controllers. A powered USB hub can help when inadequate power is the cause, but it cannot repair worn internal wiring.
- Axis jitter or drift: Apply a small simulator dead zone only for minor centre noise. Large spikes, missing travel or constantly changing values indicate a hardware fault that calibration cannot cure.
- Profiles not loading: Remove conflicting legacy software and install the package matching the exact controller. Advanced mode layers and macros generally depend on that software, although normal axes can be bound directly in the simulator.
- Stiff throttle: Reduce the resistance setting and move the levers repeatedly through their range. Do not dismantle or lubricate a unit that remains under warranty.
Will the X55 and X56 work with MSFS, X-Plane and DCS?
Yes, both work as Windows USB game controllers in Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane and DCS, but manual axis and button assignments are often required. Simulator presets vary, so a blank or poorly arranged default profile does not necessarily mean the HOTAS is faulty.
