What is slew mode in flight simulators and how do I use it?

Slew mode is a positioning tool in flight simulators that moves and rotates the aircraft without normal aerodynamic forces. Use the assigned slew toggle, then translation, altitude and rotation controls to place the aircraft where required. Level it, stop all movement and exit slew mode carefully to resume normal flight.

The term is used most often in Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS), FSX and Prepar3D. Other simulators may call the equivalent function reposition, relocate or move aircraft, so the same keyboard commands are not universal.

What does slew mode actually change?

Slew mode relocates the aircraft itself while temporarily bypassing normal flight dynamics. It can move the aircraft forward, sideways or vertically and change its heading, pitch and bank without requiring thrust or airspeed.

Slew is useful for freeing an aircraft stuck in scenery, lining up on a runway, checking an add-on airport or moving a short distance without taxiing. It is less suitable for crossing hundreds of miles or building a properly configured approach.

How do I activate and use slew mode in MSFS or FSX?

In standard PC keyboard profiles for MSFS and FSX, Y is the familiar toggle for entering and leaving slew mode. Custom profiles can change or remove that assignment, so search the active control profile for slew if the key does nothing.

  1. Prepare the aircraft. For a ground move, reduce the throttle, lower the landing gear and disengage the autopilot. Save the flight first if the simulator supports saved situations.
  2. Enter slew mode. Press the assigned toggle and confirm that normal flight dynamics have stopped. Do not keep pressing the toggle, or you may immediately leave slew again.
  3. Translate the aircraft. Use the assigned forward, backward, left, right, up and down commands. Standard PC layouts commonly use the numeric keypad for horizontal movement and function keys for vertical movement.
  4. Use short taps. Some simulators increase the slew rate while a command is held. Small inputs prevent overshooting a parking stand or burying the wheels in the terrain.
  5. Set the attitude. Adjust heading, pitch and bank separately. Before leaving slew, centre the wings and remove any steep nose-up or nose-down attitude.
  6. Stop and inspect. Release every slew input or use the assigned freeze command. Allow nearby terrain and scenery to finish loading after a large move.
  7. Exit carefully. On the ground, place the wheels on or just clear of the surface. In the air, leave safe terrain clearance and be ready to correct power, trim and airspeed as normal physics resume.

Why is slew mode not working properly?

A missing binding, keypad mismatch or unwanted controller input causes most slew-mode problems. Check these points before assuming the simulator is faulty:

  • The toggle does nothing: return focus to the simulator rather than a search box or menu, select the active keyboard profile and display all commands, not only assigned commands.
  • Movement keys do nothing: the top number row is not the same as the numeric keypad. Check Num Lock, or bind alternative keys on a laptop without a dedicated keypad.
  • The aircraft moves continuously: look for a duplicate joystick, gamepad or throttle-axis assignment. Controller drift can produce constant translation or rotation; add a dead zone or remove the unwanted binding.
  • The aircraft shoots away or spins: release held keys, use the stop or freeze commands and resume with taps. Analogue slew axes may also need lower sensitivity.
  • Slew is unavailable: structured activities, tutorials or online sessions may restrict repositioning. Test the command in an unrestricted free-flight session.
  • The aircraft crashes after exit: it was probably below the terrain mesh, too high above the ground, steeply banked or left with an unsuitable throttle and airspeed state.

Does slew mode update the flight plan or aircraft state?

No: slew mode changes location and attitude, not a complete flight setup. It does not automatically configure the active GPS leg, ATC phase, fuel, pressurisation, flaps, trim, autopilot or approach speed for the new position.

For repeatable approach practice, use a purpose-built airborne start or a saved flight with the aircraft already stabilised. If you use slew instead, line up well outside the final approach, leave adequate altitude, check the navigation sequence and establish a safe speed immediately after exiting.

A long-distance slew can also create an abrupt position jump for other pilots in an online session. Disconnect before repositioning unless the session's rules explicitly allow it.
