Learn why Steam Link is laggy and reduce streaming latency by fixing host encoding, Wi-Fi, bitrate, client decoding and TV delay.
Steam Link is usually laggy because delay builds at one of five stages: game rendering, capture, video encoding, the network, or client decoding and display. The biggest gains usually come from wiring the host PC, reducing Wi-Fi congestion, enabling hardware encoding and decoding, limiting stream resolution and frame rate, and using TV Game Mode.
This applies to Steam Link apps and Steam Remote Play generally, including flight and train simulators. A fast internet package does not guarantee low latency: local network stability, host performance and the receiving device often matter more than headline bandwidth.
What causes Steam Link lag?
Steam Link lag has several distinct causes, and the visible symptom usually indicates where to look.

A common mistake is to blame Wi-Fi for every hitch. Steam Link can only reproduce frames delivered by the host, so shader compilation, CPU stalls or an overloaded GPU will appear in the stream even when the network is perfect.
How do I identify the Steam Link bottleneck?
The detailed performance overlay or streaming statistics in the Steam Link client will show whether time is being lost during rendering, encoding, transmission or decoding.
The setting name and location vary between Steam Link app builds, but it is normally found with the client’s streaming options. Start a game, reproduce the lag and watch which measurement rises when the problem occurs:
- Rendering or capture delay: lower the game’s graphics load and use a frame-rate cap the host can sustain.
- Encoding delay: enable hardware encoding, close other recording or streaming applications, and reduce the outgoing resolution.
- Network spikes or packet loss: test Ethernet and reduce the bitrate before changing graphics settings.
- Decoding or display delay: enable hardware decoding, try a less demanding codec and inspect the receiving device’s video processing.
Test the same game directly on the host as well. If it is already uneven there, fix that first rather than trying to conceal it with Remote Play settings.
How do you reduce Steam Link latency?
The most reliable approach is to simplify the stream, establish a stable baseline and then restore quality one setting at a time.
- Wire the host PC. Connect it by Ethernet to the main router or network switch. Wiring the client too is ideal; if that is impossible, wiring only the host still removes one wireless transmission from every frame.
- Eliminate weak network links. Temporarily bypass Wi-Fi extenders, wireless mesh backhaul and powerline adapters. These can report a high link speed while adding jitter or retransmitting packets.
- Use suitable Wi-Fi. Put the client on an uncongested 5 GHz or 6 GHz connection near the access point. Avoid 2.4 GHz unless range leaves no alternative, because controllers, neighbouring networks and household devices commonly share that band.
- Stop competing traffic. Pause game downloads, cloud synchronisation, backups and high-bitrate video on the host and network. Disable a VPN while testing because it can add an unnecessary route and extra processing.
- Lower the stream before the game. Use 1080p at 60 frames per second as a practical diagnostic baseline, then reduce the bitrate until network spikes stop. Raise quality gradually afterwards. A higher bitrate improves image quality, but setting it above the connection’s stable capacity creates buffering rather than reducing delay.
- Enable hardware video processing. Turn on hardware encoding at the host and hardware decoding at the client. If an older television, phone or streaming box becomes slower with HEVC, test H.264; it uses more bandwidth at comparable quality but is often easier for older hardware to decode.
- Leave performance headroom. Do not let the game hold the GPU at full utilisation if that starves the video encoder. Lower expensive graphics settings or cap the game at a frame rate it can maintain consistently. A stable 60 fps stream is more responsive than 30 fps, but stable 30 is preferable to repeatedly missing a 60 fps target.
- Remove display processing. Enable Game Mode on the television or monitor and disable motion smoothing, noise reduction and other video enhancement features. These can make the stream look fluid while delaying every displayed frame.
- Change one variable at a time. Recheck the performance overlay after each adjustment. Changing codec, bitrate, resolution and Wi-Fi together makes it impossible to identify the actual fault.

Why is Steam Link only laggy over the internet?
Internet-only Steam Link lag is usually caused by host upload limits, packet loss, route distance or other traffic filling the connection.
Test Remote Play on the local network first. If it works properly at home but lags elsewhere, keep the host wired, set the streaming bitrate below the host connection’s sustainable upload rate and avoid simultaneous uploads. A faster package helps only when bandwidth is actually exhausted; it cannot remove physical distance, poor routing or jitter.

Is the controller causing Steam Link input lag?
The controller is rarely the main cause when the video is also delayed, but Bluetooth interference or a slow wireless controller link can add another layer of input latency.
Test a wired controller connected to the Steam Link client, then compare it with a keyboard or controller used directly at the host. If every input method feels equally late, the delay is in the video stream or display. Can Steam Link latency be eliminated completely?
Steam Link cannot be entirely latency-free because each frame must be rendered, encoded, transmitted, decoded and displayed.
A well-configured wired local connection can feel close to playing directly on the host. For competitive games, precise helicopter control or other tasks where the smallest delay matters, use the host display directly. Choose Steam Link when room-to-room convenience matters more than removing every stage of latency.
