Check whether Steam is down, identify a service outage versus a local fault, and use the right fixes without reinstalling Steam or your games.
Steam may be down if the Store, sign-in, Friends, Community and downloads fail for many users at once. Check more than one Steam service, then test another device or internet connection. A widespread outage cannot be fixed locally; if only your PC fails, restart Steam and troubleshoot its network connection.
How can you check if Steam is down?
No single test covers every Steam service because authentication, the Store, Community, Friends & Chat, Steam Cloud and content downloads can fail independently. A static page also cannot confirm Steam’s live status at the exact moment you check, so use the following isolation tests.
- Test several Steam features. Open the Steam Store and Community pages in a browser, then check sign-in, Friends & Chat and Downloads in the client. One broken feature usually means a partial service fault rather than all of Steam being down.
- Try another device on the same network. If Steam works on a phone or second PC connected to the same router, the fault is probably limited to your main computer.
- Test a different internet connection. Turn off Wi-Fi on your phone and try the Steam Store over mobile data. If mobile data works while every device on your home connection fails, suspect the router, DNS service or internet provider rather than Steam.
- Compare with an independent user. If someone on another network or in another region loses the same Steam services at the same time, a platform outage becomes much more likely.
- Consider routine maintenance. Steam maintenance commonly occurs on Tuesdays and may briefly interrupt sign-in, Community or multiplayer services. Similar symptoms can also occur during an unplanned outage at any time.

Can you fix a Steam service outage?
You cannot repair a server-side Steam outage from your PC; Valve must restore the affected service. Reinstalling Steam, deleting game files or repeatedly resetting your password will not make a remote authentication or content server recover.
If several independent tests point to an outage, leave Steam signed in and retry one affected feature after a short interval. Signing out during an authentication failure can make Offline Mode harder to use, while repeated login attempts may create confusion over whether the account or service is at fault.
Once the service responds again, exit Steam fully and reopen it. This refreshes the client’s connection and is safer than changing several network settings while the platform is unavailable.
What if Steam is only down on your PC?
A failure confined to one computer is normally a client or network configuration problem, not a Steam-wide outage. Work through the least disruptive fixes first.
- Exit Steam completely. Select Steam > Exit, check Task Manager for remaining Steam processes, then reopen the client. Restart Windows if those processes will not close normally.
- Check the system clock. Set Windows date, time and time zone automatically. A badly incorrect clock can prevent secure sign-in.
- Restart the PC and router. Disconnect the router from power briefly, reconnect it and wait for internet access to return before launching Steam.
- Remove connection intermediaries. Temporarily disconnect any VPN or proxy. Make sure security software allows Steam rather than disabling the firewall or antivirus permanently.
- Refresh DNS resolution. If Steam addresses are not resolving, open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal and run
ipconfig /flushdns, then restart Steam. - Repair download-only faults. Under Steam > Settings > Downloads, try another Download Region or clear the Download Cache. Clearing the cache can require another sign-in, so do not do it while Steam authentication is down unless you know your password and have access to Steam Guard.

Why can one game fail while Steam still works?
Many games depend on services operated separately from Steam, so successful Steam sign-in does not prove that the game’s own servers are available. Matchmaking, account authentication, downloadable content and in-game stores may each use a different provider.
Microsoft Flight Simulator illustrates this split clearly. Likewise, Steam may finish its small initial download while the simulator’s package manager cannot retrieve the main content, which requires separating Steam’s download from the MSFS package installer.
Will Steam games work during an outage?
Some installed games will run in Steam Offline Mode if the computer has signed in successfully before and the game has completed its first launch. Games requiring their own launcher, permanent online authentication, multiplayer servers or uncached updates may still refuse to start.
Do not log out or delete cached credentials merely to test an outage. If Steam is already open and authenticated, preserve that session until the service returns.
What should you do when Steam comes back online?
Reopen Steam and verify sign-in, Friends & Chat and one download before changing anything else. Queued updates should resume automatically, although a congested content service may take longer than the Store or authentication system to recover.
Give Steam Cloud time to synchronise before opening a game on multiple computers.
